Mrs. Louis J. Robbins, newly-elected •president of National Council of Women of U. S. MRS. LOUIS J. ROBBINS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN OF U. S. Mrs. Louis J. Robbins, who has served as First Vice President of the NCW for the past 5 years, was elected president on October 14 at the NCW biennial meeting. Since 1957 Mrs. Robbins has also served as chairman of the NCW International Relations Commit tee and as NCW representative to the United Nations. She has also been responsible for plan ning, coordinating and conduct ing seminars to broaden Ameri can understanding of cultures of other countries, and has edited a book, “Measure of Mankind,” a compendium of a series organiz ed by her on “Cultural Similari ties and Diversities.” Mrs. Robbins is presently chairman of the Hospitality In formation Service, on the Execu tive committee of the UN Non- Governmental Organizations, a board member of the UN Asso ciation of the USA, and on the executive committee of the In ternational Council of Women. She was one of the founders of the United Cerebral Palsy of NYC, serving as its first presi- 72 UNWLA BRANCH NEW YORK, N. Y. At the monthly meeting, No vember 19, 1964 — 18 members attended. After the opening prayer Mrs. Demey, President, stated the agenda and Mrs. Ko- tyk, Recording Secretary read the minutes. The following reports were submitted: a) Musicale, November 22nd, Chairlady Mrs. Ann Harrison re ported the program completed. The refreshment and decorating committees are well prepared. b) Annual Dance in May, 1965. Chairlady Mrs. Nettie Sa- wicki reported about her search for an appropriate ballroom. At the next meeting data will be available regarding the price for the ballroom and the orchestra. c) Membership Drive. Mrs. Mary Lesawyer sent letters to these people whose names have been submitted and followed these with telephone calls. d) Treasury Report. Mrs. Anne Bezko gave brief summary of amounts received and dis bursed during the month. e) Cultural: Mrs. Mary Dush nyck reported two books were re ceived in acknowledgement for subscriptions to “Our Life.” All should try to subscribe to “Our Life” Magazine. An article in the New York Times Book Review Section, illustrated by Yaroslava Surmach Mills, also Ukrainian Foik Tales by Marie Halun Bloch were mentioned among the best books for children in 1964. dent, and was also active in the Wiltwyck School for Boys and Fountain House, and is now on the board of Open Door Associ ates. Mrs. Robbins was born in New York City and is a graduate of N. Y. University. She lives in New York with her husband, at torney Louis J. Robbins, and their two daughters. Mrs. Robbins attended the UNWLA Reception at the World’s Fair on September 25, with several other NCW offic ers. M. Dushnyck f) Educational. Mrs. Lillian Bochonko summarized briefly the Parents Seminar, held by the Regional Council, November 15. Both the discussion and the speakers were very interesting. At the next meeting Mrs. Bo chonko will give further infor mation about teaching the Uk rainian language to interested adults, at the Holy Ghost Paro chial School in Brooklyn, N. Y. NEW 85 UNWLA BRANCH Carteret, N. J. Our Regional Council in New ark, N. J. began long ago to form a group of women of Ukrainian background in Carteret, N. J. Finally an initial committee was formed and met with Mrs. Olga Saluk, Regional Council’s Presi dent at the home of Mrs. Joseph Symchik in Carteret. Some 12 la dies attended. After the By- Laws were read and the goal of our organization discussed, all present decided to form an UN WLA Branch. Members, regard less of religious affiliations, wanted to uphold the traditional cultural heritage of their Uk rainian ancestry. Officers were elected for one year: Mrs. Kathrin Symchik, president; Mrs. Olga Rozensky, vice-president; Mrs. Andrew Shymansky, recording secre tary ; Mrs. Alfred Jacopino, trea surer. Other committee chair men: Mrs. Mary Harrow, Mem bership Chairman, Miss Joanne Symchik, Cultural Program Chairman, Miss Kathryn Har row, Publicity Chairman, Mrs. Simondeli and Mrs. Lazworsky, Auditors. Meetings will be held the sec ond Thursday of the month. Many cultural activities will be part of the workshop time at these meetings, such as: ceram ics, choral, embroidery, litera ture and folk dancing. All young girls (married or single) from the age 18 are urged to join. Spring again and once more hopes In the sad hearth germinate Once more I am lulled by dreams, Visions of a happier fate.
