Chapter 58 Report, Detroit, Mich. MAGIC SHOW — C hapter 58 sponsored a M agic Show fe a tu r ing th e Society of D etro it M agi cians. The show w as held A pril 10, 1964, a t th e U krainian N a tional Tem ple on M artin Avenue in D etroit. A crowd of 335 adults and children g ath ered to see th e m agicians perform th e ir arts. Mr. E ugene von D raginda, fa th e r of our m em ber, Johanna D raginda, acted as M aster of Cerem onies. The program includ ed an illusionist act, w ith Carl and Ju d y W olf; and an old tim e magic, in m odern style, w ith Charles A. Romig. O ther p erfo r m ers fe atu red on th e program w ere: M rs. Suzy W andas Ben n e tt, “In tern atio n al M agician” ; H arold H am m and his “M erry M arionettes” ; and th e favorite of y o u n g ste rs: “M ilky” th e Twin Pines Clown, a D etro it television personality. D uring th e in term is sion, and a t th e conclusion of th e show re fresh m e n ts w ere served in th e dow nstairs hall. The M a gic Show com m ittee included th e follow ing m em bers of C hapter 58: G eneral C hairm an, M rs. G re gory N a z a rk ; P ublicity, Miss A nn Sedorak, Miss Helen Sedo- rak , M iss A nn Zablocky and M rs. D onald K a ra la sh ; Tickets, M iss Rose S lupecki; and B u ffet Com m ittee, M rs. B ernard Solovey, M rs. P e te r M artyn and M rs. Paul G ardy. M em bers of C hapter 58 opened th e 1964 year w ith an annual m eeting held a t th e hom e of A nn Zablocky. M any of th e p resen t m em bers b ro u g h t prospective m em bers to th is m eeting. A fte r th e business session coffee and cake w ere served by our h o st ess. The M arch 10th m eeting was a special evening fo r m any of our m em bers. B efore our busi ness m eeting we g ath ered a t th e Copper Door, a re sta u ra n t in D earborn H eights, Mich., fo r cocktails and dinner. Following th e m eal we w ent to th e down sta irs room w here our m eeting w as conducted in order, and in a p leasan t atm osphere. M rs. W illiam Volker, our Re gional council president, during F eb ru a ry and M arch showed slides of au th en tic pysanky and th e a r t of m aking these b eau ti ful E a ste r eggs to m any groups in th e D etroit area. On F eb ru ary 5, a t th e G rosse Pointe M em orial M rs. W illiam Sosnowsky, our re cording secretary, helped w ith these dem onstrations. Two of our o th er m em bers, M rs. K a th e r ine Risko and M rs. M ary Kowal- czyk, p articip ated w ith M rs. Vol ker on o th er occasions. Nam ely, on M arch 16th a t th e M adison School in W yndotte, M ichigan, w here several hundred ladies gath ered to learn m ore about U krainian p y sa n k y ; and on M arch 24, a t th e D earborn Y outh C enter fo r a new ly fo rm ed U krainian Citizens (Senior G roup) who enjoyed thoroughly th e program p u t on by our U k rain ian women. Mrs. Gregory Nazark P resident octet of U N W LA B ranch 43, conducted by M rs. Irene Chum a presented tw o U krainian songs. M rs. A nna Syw ulak, secretary of B ranch 42 greeted th e rep resen tativ es of th e Regional Council, other C hapters and guests. A dinner followed, served by m em bers of UNW LA B ranch 52. The m em bers Y arem ko, Lyso- vich, Zebra, N ew m an, L etnan- chyn, B ryndsey, led by M rs. A m elia Bochey, P resid en t served th e ir m others and o th er U N W LA m em bers, w ith charm ing grace. A fte r dinner a sm all program w as given. M rs. Lidia B urachyn- ska, a m em ber of B ranch 42, em phasized, in h er address, th e m otherly ta sk of U N W LA m em bers in th e U krainian com m un ity. She surveyed d ifferen t U N W LA achievem ents in th is field. Follow ing th is, M rs. A m elia Bo chey described th e hard sh ip s of m other-im m igrants. Despite these difficulties our m others fulfilled brilliantly th e ir educa tional task. Two sm all girls from th e Sis te rs of St. B asil’s School recited verses and presented a bouquet of flow ers to M rs. A nna Syw u lak, in recognition of h er in itia tiv e role in th e founding of C hap te r 52. Several U krainian songs, re n dered by th e octet of 43 UNW LA C hapter com pleted th e program . It w as tru ly enchanting to see and h ear th is hom age bestow ed by U N W LA m em bers on M other Soyuzanka. M other’s D ay changed from th e fam ily circle to th e w ider sphere of wom en’s organization. The program w as led by M rs. S tefanie W owchok, B oard m em ber of B ranch 52 and T reasu rer of Providence A ssociation. L. B. SOYUZANKA’S MOTHER’S DAY On M ay 3,1964 U N W LA m em bers of P hiladelphia attended a touching cerem ony. I t w as Soyu- zanka’s M other Day, organ ized by 42 and 52 UNW LA B ranches. Tw enty-seven years ago, w hen B ranch 52 U N W LA w as founded it w as B ranch 42 who gave th e initiative. P lainly speaking — th e m others who had organized in U N W LA B ranch 42 prom pted th e ir d au g h ters to join UNW LA in th e ir own circle. A nd now, th is May, th ese tw o B ranches united them selves in th is exciting m eet ing. The lovely event sta rte d a t 2 p.m., in th e Y outh Home. M rs. M ary P ashuk, president of U N W LA B ranch 42, opened th e pro g ram and Rev. B. H olovinsky blessed th e food.
