The Club is also donating a copy of the Ukrainian Encyclo pedia, now being published in English, to a college library. Regarding Jr. Branch 56 of Chicago, we are heartened by the news of its renewal of acti vities. One of its first cultural projects is a dancing course for children. W ith its reactivation, this Branch should find many opportunities for organizational grow th in its community. In summation, the branches of the American-born members have made considerably great strides in furthering the aims and purposes of the UNWLA, but even greater dedication and responsibility is necessary on the p art of the membership of these groups, to realize the goals of the UNWLA. Mary Dushnyck Organization Chairman O U R LIFE Edited by Editorial Board Published by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc. 4936 N. 13th St. Philadelphia 41, Pa. THE FOLK COSTUME OF THE HUTZUL REGION Besides the folk costume of th e Poltava region another U krainian regional costume gains interest. The Hutzuls are an Ukrainian ethnic group inhabiting p art of the Carpathian m ountains, in the Hutzul woman in her native dress. west of Ukraine. Their dialect has many words of foreign ori gin and their attire is unusually rich in color and ornam ent. Hu tzuls differ from their neigh bors, even in their character. They are typical m ountaineers who love hunting and woodcarv- ing. A description of the Hutzul folk costume was very much needed. A t the request of our American-born members we mi meographed it. Description is made by Mrs. Lydia Burachyn- ska, translated by Mrs. Amelia Bochey and illustrated by Miss Christine Dochwat and Miss So fia Lada. “Folk Costume of the Hutzul Region” can be sent on request, price 50 cents. Wisdom is sometimes nearer when we stoop then when we soar. A GREAT LOSS The death of Pope John XXIII moved not only the Catholic world. His great person was ac knowledged by every thinking hum an being. In the controver sial events of today, his striving bore a ray of hope towards a better world. The Pope’s Encyclical “Peace on E a rth ” was accepted by all peoples, with great interest. Now it seems like his last will to hum anity. But then, not aware of his sudden departure, we were delighted about the great value of its thoughts, and the way it opened. The dignity of man, his rights and duties were vividly depicted in their relation to our present civilization. His words were strengthening in view of the many proofs th a t the Commun ist regime is tram pling upon hu m an values. The rig h t of a na tion to independent life was there firm ly stated. A solace and encouragement to U krainians after their centuries of b itter struggle for independence. The paragraph referring to the position of women clarified the mental atm osphere in many a quarter of earth. Pope John XXIII compared the entry of women into public, in the Free World, w ith the ruthless tram p- lin of womanhood in the Com m unist regime. This he consider ed one of the m ost fundam ental changes of the present world, her entry into public life and sharing equal rights w ith men. W hile we know and are glad of this forw ard step of women, the recognition of this by a great spiritual leader of the world is of intestim able value to us. Americans of U krainian de scent have another reason for being specially grateful to the memory of Pope John XXIII. His endeavors led to the libera tion of our M etropolitan Joseph Slipy, imprisoned these 18 years. Thanks to Pope John’s under standing his sufferings in prison were ended, and once more we have our beloved religious and spiritual leader back in the Free World. 14 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — ЧЕРВЕНЬ, 1963 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
