LETTER TO THE EDITOR A Fine Gift During the Christm as season members of Chapter 37 of the U krainian National Women’s League brought to Northville State Hospital, Northville, Mich., a fine sewing machine, which will be made available for use of wards a t the Hospital. In the pic ture, Mrs. H. T. Slaby, President, 2961 Burnham , Royal Oak, Mich., presents Mrs. Sarah M. Kyro, O.T.R., of th e Hospital’s Occupational Therapy D epart ment, the registration form for th e machine. “W i th our emphasis upon pa tients assum ing responsibility for good grooming and neatness, as well as the creative possibi lities in sewing, this gift will be a very im portant asset a t our hospital,” Mrs. Kyro said, “and will provide an excellent oppor tu n ity for patients during their leisure tim e on the wards to do some of their own sewing.” UKRAINIAN BLUE LADIES Every Sunday crowds of rela tives and friends tour hospital wards. As long as hum an beings fall ill their beloved will follow them and perform lovingly a nice social duty. But, consider people w ithout relatives in the city, or whose relatives cannot see them every day. How nice it would be for them to see another friendly face, and to hear a com passionate word. Thinking of these people, an idea was brought up in th e Uk rainian National Women’s League. W hy not visit such lone ly U krainians? It would bring them some relief, and help them to recover. Who among us, hav ing been ill can forget the ener gizing power of a kind act—po ten t as a ray of sunlight? The W elfare Committee Chair m an of UNWLA is now startin g a drive to find voluntary work ers, ladies who could give an af ternoon to visit sick people, and help them in th eir needs. Will you volunteer? FASHION TALK D ifferent trends of fashion in fluence each other. The great creators of fashion lend an item here and another there. And w hat a fascinating variety it m akes! Now, in this period, we w it ness th e influence of U krainian ideas. The dancing groups of Uk raine, a t present traveling through different countries of the free world, deliberately focus attention on th eir costumes. How few realize th a t th e flow ered hats of the recent sum m er are copies of the w reaths worn by U krainian dancers. Flowers applied on a small cap are vivid rem inders. The same is tru e of th e rich beads and necklaces worn on all kinds of dresses. Their abundance has its origins in the “nam ysto” of the dancing girl. Another piece rises up to as tonish us. The fu r cap of the elegant lady is a copy of th e fan tastic caps of th e dancing Ko zaks. Although a m an’s head gear it is a perfect fram e for a woman’s face. H. F.
