Monuments and Books The sum m its of hum an sp irit as exhibited in philosophy, in art, in lite ratu re , are a common pro p erty of all m ankind. O u tstan d ing th in k ers, a rtists, and w riters of th e world have left behind m essages universal in th e ir ap peal, and herein lies th e ir g re a t ness. The U krainian culture has also nam es of universal significance. N ot m any of them are known in A m erica due to th e lack of direct contact betw een th e tw o cul tu res, and because of th e lan guage b arrier. R ecent decades, however, have W itnessed m ajor changes in th is respect. D istanc es have dim inished, cultural in terdependence becam e evident. W orld-wide com m unication in all fields came to be recognized as an indispensable tool of in te r national understanding. This year th e U krainian com m unities in th e U nited S tates and in C anada have m ade a spe cial contribution to th e cause of in tercu ltu ral exchange. They have paid trib u te to tw o U k rain ian poets whose w ork belongs to th e realm of world lite ratu re . A Shevchenko m onum ent w as un veiled in W innipeg, Canada, m arking th e centennial of th e p o et’s death. And, 48 years a fte r h er death, and in th e 90th anni v ersary of h er b irth , th e U k rain ian women of Cleveland, Ohio, erected a statu e to commemo ra te L esya U krainka. Sculpture has th e benefit of a direct a p p ro ach ; it has its own universal language. The a r t of D a rah an ’s Shevchenko, of Cher- eshniovsky’s L esya U krainka, attem p ts forcefully and sym bo lically to depict th e tru e es sence of th e ir su b jects’ poetic m essage. M onum ents, how ever, are not enough. They only em phasize th e necessity of books. T here is no su b stitu te fo r th e study of th e poetic w orks them selves, in ori ginal if possible, in tran slatio n , if necessary. No m onum ent can re place a good biography, or a c ri tical m onograph. Books do not have th e advantageous direct ness of scu lp tu re; and th e ob stacles to good poetic tra n sla tions are g re a t indeed. Y et books alone provide tru e knowledge and understanding, reach a wide audience, and ex ert an influence both lastin g and profound. R epresentative editions of U krainian poets in E nglish tra n slation are very ra re. Serious biographical studies or mono graphs are conspicuous by th eir absence. The 1961 Shevchenko centennial will be w asted if no r epresentative E nglish Shev chenko collection or Shevchenko study should appear. We are fo rtu n a te in having a very fine rep resen tativ e edition of L esya U krainka’s w orks in Percival C undy’s translation. Spirit of Flame is a volum e beau tifully bound and printed, pub lished by an outstanding publish ing house in th is country. It con tain s a general forew ord by Cla rence A. M anning, professor of Columbia U niversity, and an au th o rity on U krainian lite ra tu re. The introductory essay by Percival Cundy, th e tran slato r, shows not only a thorough un derstanding of th e subject m at te r, b u t also a w arm , alm ost a f fectionate appreciation of Lesya U krainka and her work. And th e 300 pages of C undy’s brilliant tran slatio n s provide a represen tativ e selection from both th e lyrical and th e dram atic poems, as well as dram as. L esya U krainka shows w hat P rofessor M anning has called “th a t acceptance of th e univer sal ideals of civilization which are th e sole hope of hum an ity in th e tw en tieth cen tu ry .” M ore perhaps th a n any o th er U krain ian w riter, L esya U krainka stands close to th e values and th e W eltanschauung (conception of th e w orld) of th e W est-E uro- pean culture. T here is m uch kin ship of sp irit betw een h er w orks and those, fo r exam ple of Lord Byron, or P ercy B ysshe Shelley. L esya U krainka in Cundy’s splendid tran slatio n s is well su it ed to open th e door into th e E n g lish speaking world fo r th e best of U krainian lite ratu re . T his slogan w as s tu died in th e fam ily, in profession, in com m unity, in th e nation, and wom en’s role in it specified. The U krainian Catholic W om en’s League of C anada sent tw o representatives. Its P resident M rs. S tefanie P ototsky, M.D., from Y orkton, Saskatoon was th e official delegate, and Miss M arth a K alytovsky from P aris h er alternate. Both U krainians could give inform ation and lite r a tu re about th e Silent C hurch in U kraine.
