E very year when the tim e comes for com m encem ent ex er cises, graduation and distribution of diplom as, m any nam es of the younger generation m ake the new s. H ere and there we hear about outstanding- accom plish m ents of some individual students who earned special aw ards and honors, w ho received scholarships and prizes. A lm ost in every com m unity we can find those who distinguish them selves in som e field in. th e in stitutes of higher learning. A d rian a K r y sh ta l from Chica go was alw ays fascinated by sci ence. A lready in her first year of high school she showed a spe cial interest in Chemistry. She spent m any hours in th e labora tory learning as m uch as she could about m ixtures and com pounds, analysis and syntheses. She w as also often seen in the library w here she obtained addi tional facts and inform ations for h er own use. She intended to con tinue her studies and therefore entered a contest, the w inner of which was to receive a scholar ship. M ore than, three thousand students from different schools w ished to take p art in this con test, how ever only 256 w ere ac cepted, including 49 girls. A dri ana, being one oif the chosen, p re close inspections of schools. For these reasons, we dare say, th e C ultural Exchange P rogram will render little. It will only be a superficial acquaintance which is obtained from the tourist trips by persons who have little desire to delve into the interior of a country and its problem s. As a result she succeedd to w in the contest and received not only a scholarship, but also tw o weeks vacation at a famous resort. M artha K ram arch u k from R o chester distinguished herself in ihigh school as an excellent speak er. T herefore w hen th e local A m erican Legion sponsored a contest for the best speech about the A m erican C onstitution, M ar tha w on the first place in her school. A gain, w hen representa tives of different high schools de livered their speeches, M artha rem ained in the first place. She w as chosen, to be the w inner not only for th e content of her speech but also for her ability to present it, and her poise, h er voice, the rate and th e em phasis w ere all taken under consideration. H er original approach of the subject contributed to the success. She com pared the A m erican C onstitu tion to a rocketsihip, which in stead of exploding suibstances of death-bringing m aterials is filled w ith the idea of freedom . This rocket flies faster and further than any sputnik designed by the Soviets, because it reaches hearts and souls of all freedom loving peoples. N in a K ly m o w sk a was since her early childhood artistically in clined. As a teenager she began to. study a t th e U krainian A rt S tu dio in Philadelphia w here she was encouraged to develop h er talents. In this school she had the oppor tunity to show her artistic abili ty. Ід 1957 she designed a jacket for the book “Q uo V adis” for which she received a first prize from th e Classical Society. In the sam e year she took p art in a con test of different high schools in the state w inning first prize for her design of a dress. T he fol low ing year she was the recipient of num erous aw ards, some of them for her projects of posters in which she shows g reat ability and im agination. A fter graduation she applied for a scholarship at the Pennsyl vania A cadem y of Fine A rts sub m itting sam ples of her w ork, and w as the only one who w as aw ard ed a full four-year scholarship.
