UNWLA Highlights UKRAINIAN LITERARY AWARDS The decisions of the Annual M eeting of the Supreme Council of UNW LA have been already sent out to the Branches. Please, read them so as to review the trend of activities of your Organization, now and in the tim e to come. The most im portant item is the campaign to gain new members for your Branches, and thus for your Organization as well. The Regional Councils have already started the drive in their dis tricts. D uring the period of time up to the next Convention every re gion ought to obtain no less than 500 new members in honor of 500 Ukrainian women tortured in Kingir, K azakhstan. The Regional Council acquiring m ost new members will be distinguished at the Con vention. IWe are very glad to let our members know th at a new Branch of UNWLA has been organized at Syracuse, N. Y. It is led by Mrs. A. Kraus. So far its membership is rather not numerous, but let us hope it will grow and prosper and engage wholeheartedly in patriotic work, abreast of all other members of UNW LA. One of the im portant decisions of th e Supreme Council was the changing of the tim e and place for the next Convention of UNWLA. Owing to the fact that many central Ukrainian organizations in United States are scheduled to have their conventions in 1958 (U krainian Con gress Committee, Ukrainian National Association, U krainian W ork ingmen’s Association, United Ukrainian American Relief Committee) and have set the convention dates, UN'WLA has been compelled to put off the time of our Convention. For organizational reasons the city of New York has been chosen for the next Convention, There are still many members of UNW LA who continue to pay $2.50 as the yearly subscription for our press organ OUR L IF E . How ever, they ought to rem em ber that in accordance w ith the decision of the last UNW LA convention the subscription paid by the members as wiill as by the non-members has been evened. Thus the members, who should be the first ones to support their own periodical, are now to pay $3.00 annually. Those who sent only $2.50, will please rem it the additional am ount, or else their subscription will not cover the entire year. A Ukrainian L iterary Fund has been founded in 1956 at Chicago which recently presented three awards for the best Ukrainian works published during that year. Out of numerous writings in 1956 the judges selected three books, all w ritten by authoresses. These are “W ide W orld” by Hali- na Zhurba; “Ghosts and Dervish es” by V era W o u k ; and “Queer Fellow” by Olga Mak. “Wide W orld” by Halina Zhur ba is an autobiographical novel, describing the family life of the period tow ard the close of the 19th century, against the back ground of the Ukrainian village. This book won a wide popularity among the Ukrainians. The au thor, well known for her w ritings in the past decades, is at present living in U nited,States. She is one of the oldest U krainian authors in the Free W orld. Vera W ouk, the youngest ta l ent, is just entering the realm of Ukrainian literature. She has al ready published her collected le gends and several books of her poems. She lives in Germany where otherw ise she is engaged in scientific work. Olga Mak who has already pub lished her several writings, and a novel for junior readers am ong them, is now residing in Brazil. The U krainian women w riters are scattered throughout the lands of the F ree World.: A l though they are encountering many a difficulty in the new countries and different circum stances, they are still persevering in creating new literary works* E ternal viligance is the price of liberty.
