IN LEMKOLAND The region of Ukrainian te rri tory inhabited by Lemkos, and occupied by Poland since 1918, is a w esternm ost .corner south of Slovakia. This strip of W estern Carpathians, from San River to Poprad River, is a hard, rocky land. However, it is a beautiful country and the Lemkos have been ardently attached to it since time immemorial. Their folk attire had been cre ated under influence of hard mode of life. It is based on general U k rainian characteristics (shirt, wrap, cloak), yet it received many western modifications adapted by the Lemkos to their taste. There is likewise a particular approach in colors. Their em broidery —■ the vivid expression of taste by U k rainian woman — is modest and simple. But the outer garm ents dem onstrate many an adornm ent —■ leybik and fur coat, — most colors being shown in the com position of leybik, shirt and ap ron. However, the most characteris tic feature of the Lemko woman is her 'silhouette. In contrast to the narrow and long silhouette that is characteristic of U krain ian woman, that of the Lemko woman is widening downward ’through her skirt. This also is drawing her closer to the silhou- cause they have been obedient toots of the bolshevik regime. W e have elucidated here two moments of the lecture, repre sented as: achievements of the So viet women. These moments are some of the choiceliest samples of bolshevik falsehoods and de ceptions. Appropriately then, a question may be posted: W hat could equal rights of women, with those of men, amount to in a land where men possess no rights ? In the succeeding issues of our magazine we .shall dwell more on other significant aspects of bol shevik duplicity relative to the rights supposedly possessed by the women in Soviet Union. •1 • • O. Trofimovska ettes of w estern Slavs Slovaks and Czechs. In spite of these m arked w est ern modications the Lemko folk attire dem onstrates such ancient forms which would be difficult to find within any other branch of Ukrainian people. This is “chu- hanya” — a man’s cloak made of homespun cloth with a hood trimmed with fringe. In the se vere Carpathian climate it is pro tecting the w earer adequately from the cold weather. Л Lemko woman w'ould like wise wear a wrap over her head made of linen, tied at the back. ACTION OF THE FUND OF FIVE HUNDRED The Committee of the Fund of Five Hundred, sponsored by UN- WLA, has already begun its work. Its main objective is —- to continue our struggle against the enemy of human freedom and of humanity. The Committee is planning various media for its ac tivities. The first act was to initiate in all m ajor cities an observance of a day of Ukrainian heroine who throughout The history of U k raine has been sacrificing her life and all her earthly possessions for freedom of her homeland. In p ar ticular, it has been stressed that in the recent years of hecatomb of Ukrainian people thousands of U krainian women in the Soviet concentration camps have trod den in the footsteps of th eir fam ous predecessors. The Committee of Five H un dred has also offered the A m eri can Red Cross its readiness to co operate. As a practical field of ac tivity for the time being was chosen the searching for lost re latives of Americans of U krain ian origin. There are many of them whose relatives suffer be hind the Iron Curtain, and whose whereabouts has not been known for year?. Thisi,! searching can now be started. A special form serves this purpose. It is marked Inquiry farm і і 1609: (Rev. 2-47). The Ukrainian man from Lemkoland. A Lemko wears a round hat bent up and a dark sleeveless jacket embroi dered with silver and gold.
