Most Rev. Ambrose Senyshyn, Ukrainian Catholic Bishop of Stamford Dio cese, opened on January 22 the session of the U. S. Senate with the prayer for United States and Ukraine. Above: Prof Lev Dobriansky, Bishop Seny shyn (in the center) and Senators. INPENDENCE OF UKRAINE SENATOR SMITH ON Senator Alexander Smith (R., N. J.) made on January 17 last the following- rem arks in U. S. Senate at W ashington: Thirty-nine years ago the U k rainian Parliam ent proclaimed Ukrainian independence, and a treasured goal tow ards which these hardy people had been stri ving for one thousand years, had been attained. Hardly had this triumph occurred, however, when the dark shadow of the new and autocratic communist Russia be gan to subjugate this free repub lic. The undying devotion of these forty million people to freedom and the right of self-determ ina tion which has been such a glo rious part of their history, could not be shattered by Soviet ty ran ny, and on January 22nd celebra tions across this country will join the free world in saluting this an niversary of U krainian indepen dence. Their beliefs in the right of free world in saluting this anni versary of U krainian indepen dence. Their beliefs in the right of free selection, the right to deter mine their own form of worship, are even now being uplifted by the grow ing opinion of the world that no slave state can forever withstand the onslaught of people determined to become free. In his State of the Union M essage P res ident Eisenhow er referred to this powerful surge to “satisfy these human aspirations." “The chang es already accomplished,” he stressed, “foreshadow a world transform ed by a spirit of free dom.” The President concluded this part of his m essage w ith these significant w ords: “In the main, today’s expressions of na tionalism are in spirit, echoes of our forefathers’ struggle for in dependence/’ And so on this anniversary of Ukrainian independence let us in America recall our own devotion to hum an liberty and progress and send our expressions of friendship and hope to th e valiant people of the U kraine. THE ASSOCIATION OF UKRAINIAN WOMEN OF VENEZUELA The sorry plight of Ukrainian people dispersed hundreds of thousands of U krainian men and women all over the Free W orld. Their large communities, like those in United States and Can ada, have formed numerous and extensive organizations. In some 'Countries, however, notably in South America, the U krainian im m igrants have settled in rather smaller numbers which are never theless shaping the organizations of their own. For they are aware that in union there is strength, and that cooperation begets as sistance and self-reliance. In Caracas, Venezuela, where there is a small U krainian com munity of newcomers, the active Ukrainian women organized in 1950 the Association of U krain ian W omen of Venezuela. Since then the organization has made notable progress in the Venezu elan capital. It lent its assistance in the efforts to construct the Ukrainian National Home which serves as the center of all U krain ian activities. The Association also establish ed a kindergarten for Ukrainian children and subsequently an eve ning school where U krainian lan guage and history is being taug-ht. And prim arily the society has been caring for instructing its members in varied fields of knowledge. Last October, 1956, the Asso ciation held its annual meeting. The report of the direction dem onstrated a satisfactory w ork du ring the year gone by and m ark ed to create its filiation in another section of Caracas. The organiza tion is now headed by Mrs. O. Boshko. Eternal viligance is the price of liberty. Wendell Phillips O U R LIFE Edited by Editorial Board Published by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America» Inc> 909 N.
