U K R A IN IA N W O M A N OUR ENGLISH COLUMN The Sacrifice of Life The Ukrainian women have been continually paying- homage to the heroines of the Ukrainian people. The women of U kraine have made many sacrifices in their nation’s struggle for free- dofn and independence. Those who sacrificed their lives for lib erty of their country, had been driven by the highest patriotic motives, by the love for their na tive land that burned in their hearts. There have been many such figures across the ages of U k rainian history. However, the most recent and prom inent were the tw o whose anniversaries we have been observing in February. These are Olga Bassarab who was tortured to death in a Polish pri son in 1924, and Olena Teliha who was executed by the Nazi G esta po in 1942. The fight of the U krainian peo ple for freedom continues. Even the political prisoners in concen tration camps go on strike in. or der to bring about relief for the torm ented fellow men. They are sacrificing their blood and their liyjes. The murder of 500 women in the concentration camp at Kin- gir, Kazakhstan, shook the opin ion of the free world. The sacrificing of life is the highest self-denial of a true p at riot. In a free land this motive is not appreciated as well as it is in a country where freedom is sup pressed by arbitrary usurpers. In a .country where every one cher ished freedom, well-being and progress, the humans strive for other things., They are beckoned by' achievement of art, science^ technical skill and ingenuity as w.cll as higher standard of liveli hood. True, they are making their sacrifice on the march of prog ress, and thus are not showing so much attention to the desperate call and struggle of distant peo ples in fetters. Freedom is the basic prerequi site for the grow th and progress of every community. Hence the human race has been impelled to wage long strife for it and has been suffering and sacrificing in order to attain it. Not alone the chosen ones by destiny, the he roes, but likewise the entire mass of the people aw are of its goal, has been engaged in the struggle. And after one rank has fallen, it has been replaced by another one which has continued the resist ance. W e have recently seen an ex ample of armed resistance during the revolt in H ungary. The free world had a glimpse of rising in arms of a small yet determ ined nation against the overwhelming odds of the (Soviet colossus. Thou sands of M agyar patriots, includ ing women and children, died for liberty of their homeland. U kraine has been carrying on such struggle for freedom for more than 36 years. Along with armed revolts th at have been breaking out at intervals after both world wars, the strife has continued in various ways and spheres. Still such form of the struggle required the greatest sacrifice —■ that of human life. U kraine has been paying amply her tribute. The Ukrainian wom en, in particular, have been offer ing in sacrifices hundreds and thousands of lives. Therefore, our commemoration this year of the Ukrainian hero ines has a singular meaning — to glorify the sacrifice of life for freedom of one’s country. One may truthfully say that most blood has been voluntarily shed for freedom of the nations that had at one time been enslav ed. Thus we must perceive the noble em otions of the idealists and ought to avow the highest es teem for their de#re and striving to gain human rights for their people. The Ukrainian women’s orga nizations in the Free W orld are now getting ready to pay respect to the m em ory of our heroines. Our choirs, conductors and musi cians are cooperating in prepar ing special program s. In large cities more imposing academies are to be arranged, while in smal ler communities rather modest concerts will take place. How ever, each U krainian community in every town will commemorate our heroines. A YOUNG UKRAINIAN SINGER The Ukrainian im migrants bring into a country of their re settlem ent the man-power not only but also their artistic con tribution. This we may say of a young Canadian singer, Miss Les- sya Zyubrak who recently ap peared at the All-Canadian con test titled “Singing Stars of To -morrow.” H er singing a t this concert has been honored by the highest reward. Lessya was born at Prince Al bert, Saskatchewan. She gradu ated from a conservatory of mu sic and from a school of operatic singing at Toronto, Ont. There she first appeared in the opera “Joyful M ystery.” She has been often singing on the radio and in special CBC pro grams. Lessya signed a contract with RCA-Victor Company which is going to record her songs. Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н .
