UKRAINIAN WOMAN OUR ENGLISH COLUMN IN MEMORY OF 500 The day of M arch 18 will be a signal date this year. On this day all Ukrainian womanhood throughout the F ree W orld will gather in churches, (halls and dwellings in order to com m em or ate the sacrifice of 500 women tramipled under the Soviet tanks in Kazakhstan. The particulars of this terrify ing occurance are not known in the Free W orld. W e only know it happened in Karaganda, K a zakhstan, where during a strike women slave laborers had formed a living wall in order to thw art the onslaught by the tanks of NKVD upon the defenseless wretches. The agents driving the tanks, following the order of the commander, pressed forward at full speed and trampled under the wheels 500 women, mostly U k rainians. O ur people have suffered in the course of their history many a sacrifice. Some of them were be stial, brutal and horrifying, yet the one described here might stun even the most savage brutes. Not merely because of the atrocious act and its upshot but likewise for the reason that even in the fright ful Soviet reality this event is perhaps a unique one. The women who lodged in pro test against barbarity had the courage to organize a resistance in face of the greatest peril. They stood bravely against the muzzles of guns to shield their distressed sisters and brothers. They did not have any weapons except their moral strength 'brought forth by the righteousness of their cause. They died a m artyr’s death, how- E ternal viligance is the price of liberty. Wendell Phillips ever their deed has made its way even through- the Iron Curtain and has reached the Ukrainian women in the Free W orld. And although we all shudder with hor ror, we still take pride in this bold if desperate act of our wretched sisters. For we see in the attitude of 500 tram pled serfs not only the unheard-of violence but like wise the kind of relentless resist ance put up by the entire U krain ian nation against the bolshevik occupants. W e see the readiness of the Ukrainian woman for the struggle in the w orst conditions, as well as her moral strength, her m ightiest indicator. Therefore, as we shall assemble on M arch 18 and join all into one family praying for the victims, and as we shall come together to sorrowful meetings to commem orate these innocents — this will be a proud grieving. We shall la m ent over their loss and shall im plore God A lm ighty for theifr souls. Still we s'hall be grateful to them for their prowess, for their desperate yet brave act. Because it will tell the world of the resist ance of the Ukrainian women, and because it is an attestation to their unbending character, their their moral strength and yearn ing for freedom of their hom e land. Therefore, let us remember the 18th of M arch! L et no one of U k rainian blood be absent when the homage is paid to the m emory of 500 women. The more of us shall assemble on Sunday, M arch 18, the more will the Free W orld come to understand the tragedy of the enslaved nations. It is sole ly up to us w hether the Free W orld will learn, of this daring act, or else it will be forgotten and the sacrifice of 500 will be in vain. THE QUESTIONNAIRE OF OUR LIFE The great industrial countries offer the possibilities of new pro fessions for women. OUR L IF E conducted a questionnaire with this object in view. A social w ork er related of her training and work. Similar accounts were pre sented by a medical assistant, a li brarian, chiropodist, a driving in structor and an X -ray technician. These are new skills in which fe minine patience and endurance prove their worth. There still remain many inter esting professions well deserving an inquiry. We, therefore, ask our readers who find their professions ageeable and can say something interesting, to participate in this inquiry. This will open a wider prospect of activities and selec tions of new professions for our women. A PROMINENT WOMAN OF WINNIPEG The women o fthe city of Win- ninipeg, Manitoba, Canada, have been selecting every year 10 wo men who lhave distinguished themselves in town through their educational or other achieve ments. In 1955 one of those chosen celebreties w'as Mrs. M aria Vav- rikiv, a Ukrainian, local attorney and a social w orker of long stand ing.
