FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK On January 27 and 28, a National Convention of American Federation of International Insti tutes was held in New York City, which I have attended as a member of its Board of Directors. Two days fully packed with serious delibera tions, gave me a feeling th at I am attending our own convention. The; sim ilarity of problems and dealings with them struck me poignantly. They, too, discussed the necessity of increased membership, so vital to the life of an organiza tion, and methods of gaining and holding the members. At our XI Convention we also made plans for “m aintaining a dy namic program .” But here the sim ilarity ends, simply because our UNW LA Branches do not m aintain the program dynamically or other wise. W e seem to want a quick turn over and easily tire of a program that requires careful study and application. W e do not build up at the N a tional H eadquarters an increas ingly comprehensive and realistic picture of each Branch's situation, its assets and its needs, and keep this picture up to date. For to a t tain this end we must devise pro cedure of frank inter-com munica tion as well as the effectiveness of regularity of reports. So much for A.F.I.I. conven tion, except, in case you are inter ested., I have been re-elected for the term of the next three yars to serve as a member of the N ation al Board of Directors. * To serve — is an im portant word, it connotes the obligation to be a good member, to take keen interest in the program of the or ganization and help in its fulfill ment. It -is a privilege to give your ability, time and loyalty, the de sire to participate, to be a part of something grow ing and to* grow with-it. To • the often asked question: “W hat do I get out of our organi zation” the answer is : as much as you put into it! Your interest in organization will definitely net you a strong capital of pres tige, friendship etc., etc. There are ten Standing Com m ittees in the structure of our Ukrainian National W om en’s League of America, Inc,. Surely your talents will fit and be appre ciated in any one of them, be i t : Press, Organization, Youth, Pub lic Relations, W elfare, A rts and Exhibits, Culture, Home Econo my, Scholarship, Education o-r Constitution and By-laws. Each field has dynamic possibilities. It may be worked out in your own Branch, shared with Regional Council and reported to the N a tional Office. This fram ew ork — and I am planning to discuss with you point by point in the consecutive months right here in the columns of this m agazine “OUR L IFE .” Your queries and comments will be heartily appreciated. Please write. * The thirtieth anniversary of our UNW LA gave us a new publica tion in the English language “W o man of U kraine.” Not a heavy cumbersome volume but a handy booklet chuckful of inform ation on things you want to know and you should know,. A condensed collection of pertinent items on woman of Ukraine, her part on the scene of history, in literature, arts, professional life, science, ec onomics, politics and struggle for freedom. The booklet is richly il lustrated with a handsome mo dern cover. Just the right booklet to fit in your new stylish pocket- book, to read on your way to or from work or at any spare time. If all members of your Branch would read the “W oman of U k raine”, you can then discuss it at 3 -ou-r meetings. Your Press chair man should w rite about it to “OUR L IF E .” Oh yes, you may be sure it will be printed. W e are trem endously interested in your point of view. * Has your Branch any program planned for this summer? — Please, note that Regional Coun cil^ annual meetings are planned for this fall, most likely for Octo ber, 1956, and Junior Leaguers should plan for it. We would, at our National Of fice, appreciate some token of re membrance — a letter or at least a short note to tell us “you still care.” Cordially, Helen F. D. Lototsky, President. The path traversed by the Ukrainian woman is described in the book THE WOMAN OF UKRAINE Published by the Ukrainian National W om en’s Lea'gue of America $1.00 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
