UKRAINIAN WOMAN OUR ENGLISH COLUMN EAST AND WEST The conference of the Interna tional Women’s Alliance at Col ombo, capital of Ceylon, and the meeting oif leading- personages of the East (brought to my mind vari ous suggestions.. How many dif ferences there are in these two worlds! Not only in outer appear ance differ the women of the West and the East. The western blond hairdo and florid summer dresses, how they differ from the eastern brilliant smooth heads and gorgeous sari! The self-posses sec! bearing, direct approach, cheery expression characterize the wom en workers of the West in inter national gatherings. However, the woman of the East is distinguish ed by a feminine smile, by soft re strained motions and dignified calm. All this seems to reflect the characteristic features of the path traversed by the womanhood. The western woman has striven to win her rights througih gradual ef forts. Still, to attain something is one thing, and to hold it is another matter. Her plans, therefore, are п о л у directed toward consolida tion and widening of her position in the world. The tempo of mod ern life wiped out the charming feminine smile from her face. She knows bow to divide her time. She is working hard, for beside being the wife and the mother she is gainfully employed and has her professional duties. But she ac cepts all this consciously and will ingly as it -helps her to secure her position. She is bearing a heavy burden, yet she meets her obliga tions voluntarily.. The position of the woman of the East is quite different. She is utilizing the experience for which the woman of the West has paid exceedingly with her pioneering toil. Many rights, like voting and education, she was given automa tically. However, the woman of the East is still facing difficult problems. Beside the group of wo men with college education there are in the East millions of illiter ate, wretched women, weighed heavily upon by ancient customs. These masses had only reeentfy been under foreign domination and are awakening to independent life. They need assistance in pri mary education, in possibilities of gainful employment, and uplifting of their cultural standard. Only then they will become really wor thy and active members of their community. The woman of the East is a hard worker, yet all her labor is for the good of her family. The family in the East does not con sist just of father, mother and their children — no, it is a “con joined” family, or rather the whole breed who live in one abode, all members supporting the entire group, as well as aiding in forming of the castes. The wo man is indispensable for such a family. She is tied up with it by hundreds of customs and prejudic es which make it difficult for her to acquire education and indepen dence of the way O'f life.. She is a hard worker, like the woman of the West, still her work does not convey freedom of action or re spect. When the women of the West and of the East met at Colombo, the predominant problems that came to fore were those pertain ing to the women of the East. For else there would be no equipoise in the march of the woman to equality in all human rights. In the addresses and discussions there were sought the methods of action and of solution of the most difficult problems. The delegation of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) was in a favorable position.. The Ukrain ian woman gained rich experience Olena Prociuk, author of this article, with delegates from Ceylon and Egypt. L. to r.: Senator Mrs. Kurri (Ceylon), Mrs. El Kousy (Egypt), Mrs. Olena Prociuk (WFUWO), and Miss Mathieson, editor of the book The Journey to Freedom.
