AKRON GIRiLS HOLD ANNUAL XMAS PARJY The Jr. League women of Ak ron had their annual Christmas Party at the Ukrainian Catholic Church Hall on December 14, 1949. This year’s party proved to be by far the best one given by the Jr. League girls. The Christ mas decorations and candlelight seemed to bring out the gaiety and spirit of the occasion. Displaced Persons and other friends were our guests; the DP's had a grand time singing with us Ukrainian Christmas -ca rols and listening to English ca rols for' the first time. We in troduced to them American games which we played half and half—half Ukrainian and half American. One of the attractions that amused our friends was the mistletoe. Apparently this was one custom about which they knefw nothing- After watching for a while, they joined in. the fun. A surprise added attraction was Michael Pishko, one of our recent arrivals to this country. He played the accordian ^ while some- of the group sang and danced. Alice Tkalec. PHILADELPHIA REPORTS The Ukrainian Jr. League, Br. 52, has been quite busy during the fall season! Our Annual Banquet was held in October; once again all. the members din ed and danced. Gifts were giv en to the present officers in ap preciation of' their efforts dur ing the year. Estelle Brendzey was elected “Woman of the Year” and was honored with an orchid and gift. The officers for 1950 were introduced. They are: Lotty Hoptiak, President; Am elia Bochey, Vice-Pres.; Anne Hrib, Recording Secretary; Anne Kean, Corr. Secretary; Mary Hrib, Treasurer; Helen Wolen- sky, Ass’t Treas., Marian Kru- pa and Stella Kirloff, Sunshine Committee. The club was asked to partici pate in the doll project of the Philadelphia Federation of Wo men’s Clubs and Allied Organi zations. In this project, dolls which are donated to this group will be distributed to little or phan girls on Christmas Day. In order to interest all clubs be longing to the Federation to participate in the doll project, the Federation is awarding priz es for the' best dressed doll and also prizes to the organization contributing the greatest num ber. 1 We Jr. Leagueres got togeth er and outfitted a twenty-six incfi dolL in a beautifully embroidered Ukrainian costume as our dona tion. A drive was made to collect children’s clothing' for, the St. Basil’s* Orphanage. . Materials have been purchased by our League for children’s clothing for youngsters who are expect ed to arrive from Europe with their mothers. The annual Christmas party was held with.the usual exchange of gifts and pollyannas, the sing ing of “Mnohaya Lita,” and the anticipation of another success ful year for Branch 52 of Phila delphia. AKRON SENIOR BRANCH HOLDS SUPPER The Senior Women’s League Branch from Akron held a sup per December 11, 1949, which was attended by most of our Jr. Leaguers who cooperated with the older ranch to helbp make it a success. We have found in ’tjie past that our Senior Branch has helped to make many of our functions more successful. We in turn try to work with them. It has nitted us closer together. Alice Tkalec. At the Board meeting of UNWrL held in December it was suggested that each branch withdraw this assessment fr/bm its treasury and make reimbursement by col lecting from each member. This will insure the one hundred per cent cooperation of each branch at an early date. Send in your membership dues for the Feder ation immediately. WE’VE RENTED A HOUSE The “Mother and Child Com mittee of the World Federation of Women’s Organization” has rented a house in Philadelphia and our tenants .are displaced women and their children. A call has been made for furniture and some donations have already been made. The funds for this project were raised by Mrs. Irene Pawlikowska on her lec ture tour last year in the United States for the Mother-Child Fund. S.U.A. PINS ON SALE The official pin of Soyuz Uk rainok can be purchased from Headquarters in Philadelphia at two dollars. It is worn much the same way as a sorority or fraternity pin. Evefy good mem ber of the League should pur chase one to display "pfdiicily at Ukrainiau gatherings. CULINARY CORNER Ann Pyndyk Obtaining strictly Ukrainian recipes is quite *a task due to the fact that many of our mo thers and friends bake without a recipe and by just looking a£ the texture of the batter to know it is going to turn out just right. For example, when asking for a recipe, the reply generally comes “menshe-bil- she” this and that! Only mot.i- er herself knows what “men- she-bilshe” is after years of know-how through experience. To help in some small way to fill in a “menshe-bilshe” gap, a recipe for a Christmas delight, torte, follows: 1 cup butter 1 cup sugar four egg whites 1 cup flour 1 cup walnuts or almonds 1 teaspoonful vanilla Cream butter and sugar. Add ground nuts. (If almonds are used, blanch before grinding). Mix well and add flour, vanilla and beaten egg whites. Mix lightly and divide into two equal parts. Bake in two shallow .eight inch cake pans, .350 degrees for thirty five minutes. Cool. Spread jam between layers. Frost if de- -sired. Not knowing what you girls would like in the way of Uk rainian recipes, we would wel come suggestions and any fav orite recipes which you might like to pass on. The house lights dimmed, the curtain went up. and Ukrainian Americans from Philadelphia and surroundlin localities witnessed the ofifei; opning of the Ukrainian TJS^r| in America. ? All those present іещ into the mood of the eyeing by the small theater orcFestra un der the" direction of Barftych. Suspense and tragedy filled The auditorium as the - woeful story of the helpless town of Baturin unfolded. Tears filled the eyes of many of the older folks as they called to mind almost for gotten memories. Many of the audience no longer felt them selves in the hall. The magic spell of “theater” transported them to the val ant days of their forefathers. They were back iji the days when the czar was obeyed and Hetman wor shipped. The action of the play was en hanced by superb 'acting by a large and able cast. The scenery, because of its simplicity- convinced t|ie stark state of desperate dispair that hovered over the doomed city- All the arts at which “nashi” are so proficient were dove-tail ed and interwoven into a shining tapestry of truth and beauty; a tapestry which covered an age old wound with a gentleness and intensity that is “art” in-.its truest form.
