PEDIATRIC BURN VICTIMS MISSION

The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America is kicking off its National Engagement for the month of January- the “Pediatric Burn Victims Mission” Campaign. Our common goal is to work together to raise 10k for this very important cause. The campaign will run from January 19–February 20, 2022.

Over fifteen years ago a faulty chimney in a rural Ukrainian home ignited some nearby furniture. Five-year-old Nastya tried to put out the fire herself with some soft toys and then, desperately, with her bare palms when the flames grew larger.  After realizing that she could not cope with the fire, she found her younger sister amidst the smoke and carried her out of the burning house.  Suffering from third degree burns across 80% of her tiny body (fatal in most low- to mid-income countries), her life hung by a thread. Fate intervened and Nastya was flown to Shriners Hospital in Boston where she received life-saving care.  Today, she is a healthy young woman with a bright future, but many other children in Ukraine are not as fortunate.

There are over 40,000 burn accidents in Ukraine each year, and about 10,500 of those are children. The high cost of treating burn injuries, along with the resulting lifelong disability and disfigurement, can force a patient and their family deeper into poverty.

For almost fifteen years the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America has supported the “Doctors Collaborating to Help Children” (DCTHC) initiative. Under the leadership of Dr. Gennadiy Fuzaylov, a pediatric anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGA) and assistant professor at Harvard University, this initiative brings physicians from MGA, Shriners Burns Institute in Boston and other specialists from around the USA to Ukraine to perform state of the art burn treatment and education to Ukrainian hospitals.

Thanks to the generosity of our membership and their fundraising endeavors the UNWLA, through this initiative, has helped to transform the lives of thousands of pediatric burn victims, such as Nastya. Today, we announce the goal of raising $10,000 to support the “Doctors Collaborating to Help Children” Mission to Ukraine in 2022.

Понад п’ятнадцять років тому несправний комин став причиною займання меблів у сільській українській хатині. П’ятирічна Настя почала самотужки гасити полум‘я м’якими іграшками, а, коли полум’я розрослося, відчайдушно спробувала закрити вогонь голими долонями. Усвідомивши, що їй не впоратись з пожежею, вона знайшла у задимленому приміщенні свою молодшу сестру та винесла її з палаючого будинку. Після отриманих опіків третього ступеня – 80% її крихітного тіла (що вважається смертельним випадком у більшості країн із низьким і середнім рівнем доходу), її життя трималось на волосині. Проте, волею долі Настю доставили до лікарні Шрайнерс у Бостоні, де їй надали кваліфіковану медичну допомогу. Сьогодні це – здорова молода жінка зі світлим майбутнім. Однак, багатьом іншим дітям в Україні пощастило значно менше.

Щорічно в Україні стається понад 40 тис. нещасних випадків, що пов’язані з опіками, з яких близько 10 500 – діти. Високі витрати на лікування уражень, а також численні фізичні спотворення та довічна втрата працездатности призводять до того, що сім‘я опиняється на межі бідности.

Майже п’ятнадцять років Українська Союз Українок Америки підтримує ініціятиву «Співпраця лікарів для допомоги дітям» (DCTHC). Під керівництвом д-ра Генадія Фузайлова, дитячого анестезіолога у Загальній Лікарні Штату Масачусетс (MGA) та асистента Гарвардського Університету, ця ініціятива залучає лікарів MGA, Інституту Шрайнерс Бернс у Бостоні й інших спеціялістів з усіх куточків США в Україну з метою удосконалення майстерности лікування опіків і навчання українських медичних працівників в українських лікарнях.

Завдяки щедрости наших членів та їхнім зусиллям зі збору коштів Союз Українок Америки ця ініціятива допомогла змінити життя тисячам таких постраждалих дітей, як Наталя. Тому сьогодні ми оголошуємо про нашу мету зібрати 10 000 долярів США на підтримку «Місії дитячих опіків в Україні» у 2022 році.
