32 «ЖІНОЧИЙ СВІТ» Population THE present distribution of the Ukrainians is as fol- lows : Ukrainians under Soviet Russia According to official Soviet statistics (1931) the population of the territory known as the Ukrainian 5. 5. According to the Soviet figures of 1931 there are 8,450,000 Ukrainians living in other parts of the U.S. 5. R. outside of the Ukrainian 5. 5. R., i.e, in the European and Asiatic parts of the Б. 5. F.S. R. and_ in other Soviet Republics. Ukrainians in Poland According to the Polish census figures of 1931, there are 4,800,000 Ukrainians in the entire country of Poland. Ukrainian estimates, however, put the total number of Ukrainians in Poland at approximately 6,876,000 in 1931. The argument advanced in support of the Ukrainian estimate is as follows : Official Pol statistics report only 2,680,550 Ukrainians in Galicia in 1921. Yet the Austrian census of 1910 for the same area, compiled by census officers who were chiefly Poles, reported 3,208,092 Ukrainians, Taking into consideration the annual increase of population, A View of the City of Kamianetz allowance for war losse it is obvi- and even mak ous that the recent Polish figures are incorrect and understated. Ukrainians in Roumania The Ukrainians in Roumania are found mainly in the provinces of Bukovina and Bessarabia. Ukr: ian estimates report the number of Ukrainians in Roumania as reaching 1,160,000, but the official statistics give lower figures. Ukrainians in Czechoslovakia West of Buko in what was formerly Hun- garian territory, lies a part of Ukrainian territory known as Pod! atska Rus, which fell into the hands of Czechoslovakia after the Great War by virtue of an agreement with the circles of emigrants from that part of the country, in Ame recognized by the Great ?owers.
