6 OUR LIFE • December 2025 UNWLA Centennial Celebration Blends History, Culture, and Immense Pride The UNWLA marked its Centennial on October 19 with a cele - bration unlike any other — a gathering that beautifully reflected history, culture, and heartfelt pride within the elegant halls of New York’s Bohemian National Hall. It was a milestone few oth - er diaspora organizations have achieved, and it brought together members and UNWLA friends from across the country to honor a century of service, sisterhood, and commitment to Ukrainian culture and humanitarian work. The celebration was not merely an anniversary event, but a living testament to a century of wom- en’s leadership, service, and solidarity. As guests made their way to the concert hall, they were warmly welcomed by members of UNWLA Branch 1 and received a beau- tifully designed souvenir program. The booklet not only outlined the afternoon’s events but also featured thoughtful reflections from members of the Centennial Honorary Committee on the or - ganization’s mission and its historic milestone. “In 1925, in the heart of the Ukrainian American diaspora, a light was kindled. A light of unity, culture and purpose. A league of women dared to dream of preserving identity, empowering voices and shaping a future. This is their story!” These words invited everyone gathered at the Bohemian Na - tional Hall to take their seats, signaling that the official program was about to begin. The venue buzzed with palpable excitement as attendees greeted old friends and found their seats in the beautifully illuminated hall. As everyone settled in, Marianna Za- jac, Chair of the Centennial Planning Committee, officially opened the program by introducing and welcoming dignitaries, the Cen- tennial Honorary Committee, community leaders, sponsors, supporters, UNWLA leadership past and present, and especially UNWLA members, stating “each of you is part of this beautiful legacy!” Their Eminences Metropolitan Borys Gudziak, Archbish - op of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the U.S., and Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the U.S.A., eloquently bestowed their blessings on those present and on all UNWLA members and their families. A moment of silence followed: for Ukrainian soldiers who sacrificed their precious lives for Ukraine and for UNWLA members who had passed away but whose legacy lives on. With gratitude and pride, UNWLA President Natalie Pawlenko and Centennial Chair Marianna Zajac listened as Oresta Starak, First Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States, read a personal letter from President Volodymyr Zelensky. In his message, the President congratulated the UNWLA on its Cen- tennial, writing: “It is the courage to be the voice of truth, the Marianna Zajac , UNWLA Honorary President The program booklet.
