НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Грудень 2025 39 OUR HEALTH Ihor Magun, MD, FACP Just because it’s only December does not mean we have to wait until January to start improving our health, life, and disposition. Starting now will propel you into the new year with a better and stronger mindset. There is a saying, “you don’t get motivated, then do some - thing; you do something, and that gets you motivated.” Several suggestions on what we can do to improve ourselves follow. It’s good to learn new things from scratch (even things we think we already know). A begin - ner’s mindset can be powerful. When we let our overconfidence and complacency step in, we lit - erally stagnate. Next time you feel stressed, try this breathing exercise, called 4-7-8. Start with one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Take a deep, slow breath while counting to four. Feel your bel - ly rise and your lungs fill with air. Count to seven as you hold your breath. Breathe out slowly for a A Gift to Yourself count of eight, pushing all the air out of your lungs. Repeat three times or until you feel calm. If you want to improve any as - pect of your life, you must prac - tice with purpose and strategy. It isn’t easy to iron out bad habits, especially if you have been reinforcing them for years. Identify and address these habits so you can break them. When you are faced with ma - jor life crises and loss, use the first line of defense — our clos - est relationship. This provides support and helps us cope and handle difficult situations. Love yourself as if you are your responsibility. Reframing self- love gives us permission to root it in action rather than just sen - timent. Give yourself permission to rest. All of us max out our dai - ly schedule only to lie down and find ourselves restless, with our minds racing. Intentional rest restores a sense of stability and security. When you reflect on any mis - takes you may have made in your life, remember this phrase: “when I make a mistake, it’s not a mistake so much as a choice that wasn’t quite right.” Take big goals and break them up into smaller tasks. Incorpo - rating this approach helps make long-term goals manageable. This translates into having you feel like you are making progress while fueling your drive. Transformation happens suc - cessfully through small, consist - ent changes. Over time, these steps empower you to be your best. Here’s to a better you!
