14 OUR LIFE • March-April 2024 ЗАХИЩАЄМО • ADVOCATE Ukrainians around the world marked the second year of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and 10 years of war, during the week of February 24, gather - ing to commemorate victims, homes, and cities lost. The Ann Arbor community held a Vigil for Ukraine on Monday, February 19, on the University of Mich - igan Diag – a deeply intense and special event dur - ing this time of war. We are stubborn, strong-willed fighters. We don't take no for an answer. We will not stop. We have hope. We have Ukraine. Our zealous Congresswoman, Rep. Debbie Dingell, asked us not to give up hope as we fight for aid. May - or Christopher Taylor shared that Ann Arbor stands with Ukraine. University of Michigan scholars Kate - rina Sirinok-Dolgarova, Associate Professor of Jour - Across the U.S. on February 24, Soyuzianky Advocated for Ukraine nalism, and Yuri Kaparulin, Associate Professor of International Law, shared their stories and nostalgia for a free Ukraine. We marched in silence from the Diag to the Burton Memorial Tower, where the carill- onist rang three Ukrainian songs: Plyve Kacha, an an- cient song warning of the risks of warfare; Chervona Kalyna, a patriotic march first published in 1875 by Volodymyr Antonovych and Mykhailo Drahomanov and associated with the Ukrainian people's aspira- tion for independence; and the Ukrainian national anthem. The vigil and rally were followed by a cap- tivating lecture by journalist Iuliia Mendel, former press secretary to President Zelensky and author of The Fight of Our Lives. – Nadine Maruszczak, Branch 50 Advocacy Chair Branch 50, Ann Arbor, MI
