12 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “ НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ ”, ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ 2020 and had even attached wheels onto the very heavy cubbie shelf! Dr. Ihor Hutnik built shelves for the educational materials. Some wooden chairs were found in the church garage. A fence was erected around the playground, and the physical elements were c omplete. We posted an ad about our endeavor in the national journal of the American Montessori Soci- ety, and four Montessori schools responded with surplus Montessori educational equipment. The Carolinas sent us care packages, and I picked up math supplies from a school in Brooklyn and lan- guage supplies from two sch ools in Manhattan. One of the Catholic Montessori schools on the west side of Manhattan was run by Sister Lucy Sabatini who was very generous and tried to give us as much as would fit into my car . She told me, “I want to help. Those Ukrainian people have s uffered enough!” Small in stature, she was a woman with a very big heart. The preparation for opening the center was progressing except for the license application. Fi- nally, Fr. Bohdan donned hi s clerical collar, trav- eled to city hall and insisted that an application had indeed been filed for a license many weeks be- fore. After an intensive search, St. John’s applica- tion was found stuck to another applicant’s file! Success at last! St. John’s ope ned its doors in September of 1989. The enrollment over the y ears has included children from New Jersey as well as children from New York and Pennsylvania. When Ukraine declared independence in 1991, we celebrated with joy. A lifelong goal had been achiev ed for our parents’ generation. Ironi- cally, the influx of Ukr ainian speaking women who could work as nannies increased dramatically, and the choice for parents became more complex. Why pay for a daycare center when a nanny could care for children in the co mfort of their own home? Nonetheless, many parents realized t hat the edu- cational components of St. John’s held great bene- fits for their children. Thus we began to emphasize the Montessori preschool experience as a valuable component of our program besides offering ex- tended care hours for working parents. The commit tee of women ( some of whom belong to the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America ) , education chair Pani Olga Trytyak and Father Bohdan worked together to achieve a unique experience for our U krainian community. Individual members of Branch 75 continue to sup- port the preschool by contributing art supplies, pa- per and educational materials. Nadia Jaworiw of Branch 98 contributes an annual monetary dona- tion. The result of all this is most gratifyi ng. Not only is the Ukrainian language supported for the fami lies involved, but the spiritual and cultural growth of their young children is nourished. The story continues. St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Newark, N.J., has supported th is affordable Ukrainian Montessori program as a community ser vice for thirty years. I am grateful to be a part of this experience.
