28 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2016 The 90 th anniversary of the UNWLA commemoration was held at the annual church Autumn- Fest. A UNWLA banner was proudly hung, and a slide show looped on a television screen, displaying many pictures of past branch events. UNWLA brochures, membership applications, educational materi- als, and Ukrainian artifacts were part of the branch display at this event. Branch 136, Naples Florida: In January, Katie Egan, feature reporter for The Naples Daily New, attended a Branch 136 meeting. She later wrote an extensive article, along with an online video reference, which appeared in the local newspaper. The article highlighted the newly formed Ukrainian women’s or- ganization in Naples; because of this and additional publicity, the branch gained many new members. This anecdotal example underscores that public relations are important in building a vibrant branch and educating the American community, a lesson that Branch 136 has adopted and practices. Branch 136’s President Natalie Santarsiero, and Membership Chair Halyna Traversa Young attended the February meeting of a Naples club called "Country, Culture, and Customs," where they presented infor- mation about the current events in Ukraine, along with an overview of the Ukrainian history, culture, and traditions. In February, the Naples branch organized a protest against Russian conductor, Valery Gergiev, who was performing at the Naples Philharmonic. Once again, Branch 136 received extensive newspaper coverage that brought attention to current events in Ukraine. Branch members also organized and coordinated two displays at a local library. One display fea- tured Ukrainian artifacts, embroidery, etc. while the other featured our “pysanka.” A concise article on the displays, along with a photo, appeared in The Spotlight Magazine. More wonderful coverage for the Ukrainian community and the women of the Naples branch. In March, BAL Co-Liaisons Orysia Zinycz and Olya Czerkas were guest speakers at a Branch 136 meeting. They spoke about the function of BALs and the goals of the UNWLA, highlighting the important contributions women make by being UNWLA members. Has “Sharing Successes” had an impact on the BALs? We think so, partly because branch presi- dents have given very positive feedback, confirming that “Sharing Successes” has been helpful in plan- ning future activities and inspiring additional activities by giving comprehensive snapshots of individual branch successes. Most importantly, “Sharing Successes” has become a useful communication tool which unites the BALs into one supportive family. _________________________________ BRANCH 124, ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA On Palm Sunday, March 20, 2016, members of Branch 124 of St. Petersburg, Florida, reprised an annual tradition and assembled fourteen Easter Baskets to be distributed to elderly and housebound members of the community. Each basket contained a paska, pysanky, sausage, chocolates, candy, and butter. This year young helpers watched and helped as the baskets were filled for the Easter deliveries.
