“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 33 product for hair loss and is available over-the- counter. Although proper application and dai- ly use of this product is necessary for opti- mum results, many female hair loss sufferers use the feminine version of Rogaine and find it helpful. A few other products may slightly grow hair with special type of lights such as pulsating lights, but the results are not visual- ly significant, and the cost of these devices is high. Remember that hair, once it leaves the bulb, is no longer alive. The only method of changing the hair is applying agents that cling to the hair or coat it to make it appear thicker or chemically alter the structure resulting in either curly hair (via a type of permanent) or straightened hair (keratin treatment). I hope this information will help you take good care of your hair and achieve the best possi- ble look! WHEN TO APPLY OR DEFY YOUR COSMETICS by Maximilian Magun, Pharm.D. Candidate It has always been said that you cannot judge a book by its cover; this is a bold statement in a world of numerous cosmetic products which we apply on a daily basis to please the senses of others. From makeup to perfume to cleansing products, we all seem to stress about our appear- ance. There is no doubt that these products make you look, smell, and feel superb on the outside, but are they equally pleasing to our bodies? How much is too much, and what should you avoid? When is it time to toss those products and pur- chase new ones? Makeup and cosmetic products do expire, and it is important to throw them away when they do. Expiration dates could be found on the prod- uct itself or can be listed as 2m, 6m, or 12m, meaning that it will expire in two, six, or twelve months from the day it is opened. The expiration of liquid makeup products can be noted when a uniform mixture is no longer present; when there is a clear separation of the darker compound on the bottom of the container and an oily compound resting above it as a top layer, it is time to toss it out. One may think that vigorously mixing the product may help to combine the two ingredients and make it usable, but it will eventually separate when applied to the skin or face, causing the oil to clog pores, which results in acne and other skin irritations. All makeup—but in particular eye makeup (including eye liner, eye shadow, and mascara) as well as lip glosses and lipsticks— should be kept at a cool temperature and always capped when not used. Although there may be no expiration date on some of these non-liquid prod- ucts, it is important to not share these products with others and to keep them clean to prevent bac- terial growth, which could lead to infections and unnecessary trips to the pharmacy or the doctor. To prevent bacterial growth, manufactur- ers of cosmetic products include preservatives in the form of parabens: methylparaben, ethylpara- ben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. The con- cern with parabens is that they have the potential to disrupt the body’s natural hormonal function. Parabens resemble estrogens, binding to the same receptor and producing the same effects. Poten- tial risks of additional estrogen to the body in- clude breast and endometrial cancer, risk of car- diovascular events such as a stroke or a heart at- tack, or the potential for early onset of dementia. According to the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), parabens can be safely used in cosmetic products up to a level of 25% and are typically found in concentrations ranging from 0.01-0.3%. The four parabens have a potency of about 1,000 x less than that of natural and synthetic estrogens and have not been proven to cause cancer or be harmful in any way. Thus, it is not necessary to choose only “paraben free” products. Cosmetics give us the feeling of accentu- ated beauty and are in fact safe when used properly. In addition to noting expiration dates, keeping products capped, clean, and stored at a cool temperature, and understanding paraben in- gredient safety, users should not apply cosmetic products on broken skin because it can increase the absorption of chemicals into the body. Know- ing this information about cosmetics, you can confidently use your makeup and show the world your beauty!
