2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 27 The Ukrainian dancers at the 2nd Annual Kingston Block Party. which we demonstrated how to write the chil- dren’s names in Ukrainian. There was also a variety of different ethnic foods to enjoy. Outside of the classic hot dogs, hamburgers, chocolate chip cookies, and frozen ic- es, there was chicken paella, fried whiting fish sandwiches, empanadas, burritos, tacos, chimi- changas, and luscious Mexican horchata (cinna- mon rice milk) to wash them down. International desserts included Ukrainian medivnyk, Greek bak- lava, Irish soda bread, and German honey cake. It was estimated that we had about 1, 000 visitors during the four-hour event. Our colorful displays drew in as many adults as children, and we fielded several questions about our homeland and culture. Visitors also enjoyed the headband vinky that we sold, the honey cake lovingly made by our branch members, and especially our danc- ers with the Cossack sword dance and the debut of our littlest dancer (aged 4) being the big- gest hits. Those of us who were there for the day thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and all the activities. We were profusely complimented by the organizers on our work, visual impact, and the professional skill of our dancers. We have already been asked to participate in the 2015 event, and I was asked to remain on the planning board to which I, our branch, and our dancers answered with a hearty “yes!” I think they were impressed with us! As plans are in the works for this year’s event, we as a branch and community are working on what we will present. So do not be surprised if we have a follow-up arti- cle on the 3rd Annual Kingston Multicultural Block Party as we enjoyed being a part of the 2014 event. Although the block party and the Ukrainian community’s participation were great successes, my strongest takeaway from this event was great pride in my branch: once we commit to some- thing, ALL my branch sisters will help in one way or another despite our busy lives and schedules. Whether it be baking and selling over 30 mediv- nyky; making displays, handouts, bookmarks, and vinky ; participating in the actual event; or supply- ing needed items like coolers, ice, water, tables, chairs, and a tent for the day, I know I can count on them, and they came through beautifully! So this article is my way to share our experience and to express how truly grateful I am to my branch not only for their help and participation in some- thing that promotes our culture, our values, and our community, but also, and most importantly, for sharing and contributing to such an enjoyable day. I love you all my “sisters”! Duzhe diakuyu!
