14 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2015 According to President Petro Poroshenko, Nadiya Savchenko will be released from pre-trial detention in Moscow by early March or sooner. Although, according to the president, Nadiya’s re- lease is part of the deal that was reached in Minsk on February 12th, her sister, Vira Savchenko, re- mains pessimistic about her release. The Minsk agreement states that “all those ‘illegally kept’ will be released.” However, Vira says that in Russia’s eyes Nadiya is a legally imprisoned person. (Please see Nadiya’s drawing during a recent court hearing on page 6.) In addition, Senate Resolution #52 calling for the release of Nadiya was adopted on February 12th. Most resolutions that are introduced never pass, but even among the few that are accepted, passage within two weeks of introduction, as was the case with Resolution #52, is unusual, testify- ing to the concern over Nadiya’s dire situa- tion. The situation is indeed dire, but the UNWLA will continue to advocate the issue based on the advice of Nadiya’s lawyers. On February 10th, Dr. Tamara Martse- nyuk, Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology at the National University of Kyiv Mo- hyla Academy, gave an interesting lecture on the role of women in the Euromaidan protests of 2013-2014. The presentation was organized by the Ukrainian Studies Program at the Harriman Institute at Columbia University, and I had the opportunity to attend. Dr. Martsenyuk’s conclu- sions were that women’s participation in Euro- maidan largely reflected the social position of women in Ukrainian society: that women were participants—and not just helpers in Euro- maidan—and that they had the possibility to not only fulfill what are viewed as “traditional” roles, but were also able to find new avenues for equal participation with men. March is traditionally “women in history” month, but our minds and hearts turn to today’s women of the Euromaidan, the women in the armed forces of Ukraine, the women supporting the armed forces as doctors, nurses, volunteers, etc., and the widows left behind with families. We thank them for their heroic contributions—as these women mark their own places in the history of their country. OUR COVER ARTIST – To view a work of art by Maria Shust gracing the cover of Our Life may come as a surprise to many readers who know her primarily as the Director of the Ukrainian Museum since its in- ception in 1976. Yet that was also the year she received her MFA degree from the University of Pennsyl- vania. Her works are privately held and infrequently exhibited. The Ukrainian Museum’s recent exhibi- tion, “Members Collect I,” presented a rare opportunity to view her graphic works and sculpture. The cover work, entitled “The Shell,” is a print from a series of four, executed in 1975. In it she explores the abstract properties of natural forms: the tension between volume and space, surface and depth, and the interplay between the simplicity and complexity of forms. Insightfully considered, exquis- itely executed, the image is a thoughtful meditation on the intersection of nature and art. Maria Shust has brought to her position of the Museum Director the same properties of thought- fulness, depth of involvement, and an aesthetic acuity that nurtured her art. Both the Museum and the Ukrainian community are that much richer for it. Того ж року Марія Шуст отримала диплом маґістра мистецтва від Університету Пенсильванії. Її мистецькі твори зберігаються у приватних колекціях і нечасто виставляються. Нещодавня виставка в Українському Музеї, «З колекцій членів Музею І», дарувала нам рідкісну можливість побачити її графіку та скульптури. На обкладинці представлено офорт «Мушля» із серії чотирьох робіт, виконаних 1975 року. В цьому творі мисткиня досліджує абстрактні властивості природніх форм: напругу між об'ємом та простором, поверхнею та глибиною, а також між простотою і складністю форм. Ретельно обдумана та вишукано виконана, ця мистецька робота є виваженою медитацією про перетин природи і мистецтва. Як директор Музею, Марія Шуст втілює ті самі якости вдумливости, глибини заангажо- ваности та витонченого естетичного смаку, які притаманні її роботам.
