“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 13 In September of 2014, at the annual meet- ing of the UNWLA National Board, newly elected Board members discussed their vision for our or- ganization and fine-tuned our mission statement: “Uniting women of Ukrainian descent and affiliation in service, friendship, and dedi- cation in order to promote and develop educational and cultural efforts as well as humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians worldwide.” The UNWLA’s mission has re- mained steadfast throughout its history; however, the newest members of the Board were able to in- troduce their own spirit into this statement. It was suggested and recommended by the Board meet- ing’s workshop facilitator that our Board, Region- al Councils, and Branches read this statement at the opening of each meeting during this, our 90th anniversary year, to remind themselves what a noble and selfless organization the UNWLA truly is as well as to reinforce why we belong to it. I wholeheartedly support this proposal and en- courage our membership to adopt this practice. The situation in Ukraine and its victims continued to dominate our efforts during the past month. We have continued to work with diaspora organizations and led in the push to gain support for Ukraine in the U.S. Congress and in the Sen- ate. As a grassroots organization, our member- ship’s influence with its representatives nation- wide is an important strength. Due to joint efforts and key players in Washington, a Ukrainian cau- cus was formed in the U.S. Senate on February 9th. The goal of the caucus will be to strengthen the political, military, economic, and cultural rela- tionship between the United States and Ukraine. Diaspora representatives will work with this cau- cus, as well as with the congressional caucus as the situation in Ukraine after the signing of the Minsk 2 agreement remains both dangerous and very critical. The effort to push for the release of Na- diya Savchenko has been ongoing worldwide. The UNWLA spearheaded the forming of an ad hoc committee of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania organizations with the goal of holding a press conference at the Ukrainian Mu- seum on January 26th, the date of the first PACE (Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Eu- rope) session of the year. The suggestion for this press conference came from Nadiya’s lawyers and the date of January 26th was designated the “Global Free Nadiya Savchenko Day.” Unfortu- nately, due to scheduling conflicts of invited guests (congressmen and UN ambassadors), the press conference did not take place; however, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all or- ganizations who cooperated in this effort to bring greater awareness to Nadiya’s plight. In this plan- ning process, a UNWLA committee composed and designed a brochure to be used by all com- mittee members as needed. (Please see p. 4-5). Concurrently, on January 25th, the NYC chapter of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America organized a rally in support of Nadiya Savchenko. I was asked to say a few words and reminded those present of our organization’s long history of act- ing in defense of human rights by stat- ing: “We turn to our fellow Americans for your support and we’ve come here today to share Nadiya’s plight with you. She has a history in her short 33 years of life of fighting for what she believes in. We implore you to join forces with us to free Nadiya Savchenko and allow her to continue to do so!” Several members of the UNWLA branches in the New York City area also enthusiastically partici- pated in the rally. _________________________ Savchenko rally.
