“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ-СЕРПЕНЬ 2015 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 27 Residents who were mobile could sit out- side on benches in a well-tended and ver- dant campus. Upon reading Director Kolkevich’s plea, Ksenia Rakowsky, New Jersey Regional Council Presi- dent, quickly communicated his request to the New Jersey branch presidents, who then shared the information with their members. Support to purchase a commercial washing machine for Tyvriv Geriatric was unanimous! Fundraising ef- forts commenced immediately and in March of 2015 the New Jersey Regional Council met its goal! On March 17, 2015, Director Kolkevich, wrote again: All of the staff and residents of Tyvriv Geriat- ric Center sincerely thank you for the washing machine you purchased for us. The machine is already hard at work and we are all very pleased with how it is performing. We look forward to continuing communications with your membership and will appreciate any ad- ditional support which you can lend. We have received the photo that you sent. We will appreciate others so that residents and staff can see the faces of the good people who sent us the washing machine. We are aston- ished and very thankful that from such a far- away place on our planet we are receiving such generous and heart-felt support from our fellow Ukrainians. The UNWLA has been repeatedly recog- nized for its successful social service activities throughout the world. The purchase of the wash- ing machine for the Tyvriv Center demonstrates the New Jersey Regional Council’s ongoing com- mitment to the social welfare program, “Assis- tance and Care for the Elderly in Ukraine,” which was initiated in 2011 by the Executive Board. This program and the fund, which bears its name, pro- vide the framework for UNWLA branches and regions to help less fortunate seniors and handi- capped persons living in nursing homes in Ukraine. The New Jersey Regional Council’s as- sistance project to Tyvriv Geriatric is a great ex- ample of the benefit that comes when the Execu- tive Board, regional councils, and branches work collaboratively and within organizational guide- lines to deliver humanitarian aid to those who sorely need it.
