UNWLA.ORG 31 IN MEMORIAM UNWLA BRANCH 58 OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, REMEMBERS OLGA DUBRIWNYJ SOLOVEY Our most devoted member of 57 years, who served as branch recor d- ing secretary, program chair, and hostess par e x- cellence, Olga (“Olya”) Dubriwnyj Solovey passed away on May 7, 2013, at the age of 81. Her parents, Dmytro and Tatiana Dubriwnyj, immigrated to the Uni ted States and had 4 children of which Olga was the second ol d- est. The unexpected gift of a piano from dear fam i- ly friends, Theodore and Catherine Wichorek, was to have a major influence on the course of Olga’s life. She started piano lessons with a nun f rom St. John’s Ukrainian Catholic School and continued her music studies at Cass Technical High School and Wayne State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. As an accomplished pianist , Olga gene r- ously gave of her talent accomp anying renowned soloists and choirs in both the Ukrainian and American communities. She also served as cantor and choir director in the Ukrainian Catholic Church for 42 years and in the process trained several cantors. As a public school teacher and choir director in the Ukrainian community, she created and directed many memorable programs in the schools, organizations, and churches with which she was associated. As a you ng woman, Olga joined Branch 58, along with other daughters of Branch 23 members. D uri ng the 1950s, they created and pe r- formed annual vaudeville - style shows at the Ukrainian National Temple , which Olga helped develop and accompanied on the pian o. Through the years, Olga participated in many UNWLA gatherings and was often playing dinner musi c, leading a sing - along, accompanying a soloist, or directing a group of singers. Since 2000, her women’s vocal trio “Soloveyky,” composed of Natalka Maruszczak (Br. 115), Kristie Olszewski, and Lily Litynskyj (Br. 115), have frequently en - tertained at UNWLA events in metropolitan D e- troit, and performed for the 2008 UNWLA N a- tional Convention in Troy, Michigan, and various branch anniversaries, including in Chicago, Illi - nois. Olga also led sing - alongs of Ukrainian Christmas carols, with her masterful pia no accom - paniment, at the annual Christmas party of the Detroit Regional Council for many years. She was presented with “Hramoty” in 2000 and 2005 for her dedicated and generous work for the UNWLA. One of the major projects which Branch 58 supported through their hard work and ded i- cation was the development of the Ukrainian Vi l- lage Apartments in Warren, Michigan, which pr o- vide housing for senior citizens. As the Choir D i- rector of “Zoloti Dzvony” (Golden Bells) Seniors’ Choral Ensemble, Olga rehearsed with her group weekly at the Ukrainian Village and often pe r- formed there. She directed many “God Bless America” programs at the Independence Day pi c- nics sponsored by Branch 58 at the Ukrainian Vi l- lage and many seniors benefited from either being members o f the Golden Bells or listening to their lively renditions of Ukrainian folk song favorites or American standards. In September of 2011, Olga was deeply honored to be given a surprise birthday party sponsored by dear friends from several Detroit - are a Ukrainian organizations , including the UNWLA. This festive evening was rich with elo - quent tributes from fellow community activists and heart - warming performances by her many musician colleagues. It en ded with her signature “Sing - Along with Olya , ” led by the honoree he r- self. She said that it was one of the happiest and most wonderful days of her life.
