“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 201 3 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 17 The UNWLA archives are clear ev i- dence of a sustained and unified relief e f- f ort and the determination and persistence of the UNWLA in the face of indifference. It has been 80 years since this dreadful period in the history of Ukraine and its citizens. One of the UNWLA’s most important missions has been to continue sharing the tra gic news of the Holodomor and keep its campaign of awar e- ness alive. On the 50th anniversary of the Famine, copies of UNWLA archives documenting its e x- tensive efforts in 1933 - 34 were sent to the U.S. Congress Commission on the Ukrainian Famine. On the 70th anniversary in 2003, the N o- vember issue of Our Life was dedicated to UNWLA archival materials — in order to document this historical period. We offer you a reprint of this special edition on the occasion of the 80th anniversary. In 2003, on that 70th annive rsary, a nationwide campaign inviting other Ukrainian American organizations to join us, was initiated: it encouraged the purchase of books on the Holo - domor theme to be donated to local libraries but also for membership to ensure their circulation. UNWLA Education Chair and a special committee member, with the funding of the Ukrainian Congress Committee, authored a ma n- ual for middle school grades entitled Genocide, Never Again . This material was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. On the 75th anniversary, the XXVIII UN - WLA Convention Book and the Convention itself were dedicated to the victims of the Holodomor. In 2010, an English translation of Svicha Pamyaty , an oral history of the Ukrainian Gen o- cide by historian Dr. Valentyna Borysenk o, was translated and published by the UNWLA. This book, entitled A Candle in Remembrance , was mailed with a cover letter to selected leading U.S., Canadian, and British universities; in addition, UNWLA branches were asked to donate the book to their local libraries. We thank Professor Mark Von Hagen for his endorsement of the book! Our organization and its state branches have offered continued support for adopting the topic of the Holodomor into social studies curricula. UNWLA members participate in an nual commemorative marches and services in their local communities. To give just a few examples, our members in the State of Connecticut are very active in their local Holodomor Awareness Co m- mittee; our California membership has recently participated in th e development of an exhibit in the Los Angeles, California, City Hall; and the UNWLA Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, branch pres i- dent serves as Chair of their local Ukrainian Fa m- ine Committee. Finally, the UNWLA has been an active member of the U.S. Holodomor Co mmittee since its inception. We applaud the efforts of this co m- mittee and its success in the coming construction of the Holodomor Memorial in Washington, D.C. Its architect and designer, Larysa Kurylas, is a UNWLA member - at - large, and we congratulate her f or her profound, yet simple expression of the Famine’s loss of life. I’d like to conclude with a quote from “Four Ears of Corn,” 1933 Witness, Stories of Genocide and Urban Survival : “Recollection of the horrors of the Famine of 1933 had become a sort of r itual in our family... When, in time, I b e- came a mother myself, I better grasped the pain my poor mother suffered, and understood the scope of her tragedy. Her endurance and unyiel d- ing faith fueled her to survive it all — for us ...” As Ukrainian women, as moth ers, and as members of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, an organization which binds generations and immigrations of women of Ukrainian descent, we will continue to remember the victims of the Ukrainian Genocide of 1932 - 33. Our commitment t o be the vehicle of awareness and education about the Ukrainian Genocide has been steadfast and will continue to be so in the future ! ДО УВАГИ МИСТЦІВ І ШАНУВАЛЬНИКІВ МИСТЕЦТВА!
