“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2012 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 25 sixteen wheelchairs. Other branches were co n- tacted and joi ned in donating funds. Branches 86, 131 and 65 contributed generously to this project . The collaborative efforts extended beyond our UNWLA family, as the purchase and tran s- portatio n of the wheelchairs to Ukraine was ha n- dled through the first - rate “Wheelchair s for Ukraine” program, undertaken by St . John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Newark, NJ. Their assistance was vit al. Sadly , many whee l- chairs are still needed for the elderly a nd children throughout Ukraine. Ksenia Hapij is administer - ing the pr ogram for the church and can be co n- tacted directly for specific wheelchair donations (Tel: (973) 371 - 1356). And so, our President Roksolana Misilo is happy to report that our gift of sixteen whee l- chairs has arrived in Ukraine. What a precious gift to rec e ive for Christmas! And for us, it is a precious gift of spiritual uplifting! May this story of gift - giving serve as a “spark” to ignite a desire in others to participate in this worthwhile chari t- able project. Roma Lisovich , Branc h 75 Press Secretary _____________________________ ___ ___________________ UNWLA Branch 98 Seeks New Members In 2012 UNWLA Branch 98 of Holmdel/Middle - town , NJ , started the New Year with its annual meeting on January 11, 2012. An important part of the meeting was welcoming two new members, Ms. Natalie Pawlenko and her mother, Mrs. Hel e- na O. Pawlenko. The agenda included a look back to 2011 with officers and commi ttee members providing reports on t heir activities, starting with President Victoria Mischenko. The UNWLA New Jersey Regional Council President, Olha Lukiw , presided over this well - attended meeting. The branch conducted regular meetings and activities du ring the year , but the highlight of 2011 was the XXIX UNWLA National Convention, which was held in New Jersey in May. Branch 9 8 was responsible for the Exhibits and showed fu r- ther support with the attendance of a number of members. Fundraising was an imp ortant activity during the year and allowed the branch to fulfill its obligations to the UNWLA Headquarters, i n- cluding sponsoring students through the UNWLA Scholarship Program. The branch held an annual picnic, a Christmas party, and a gift - wrapping event at a local Barnes & Noble bookstore. The gift - wrapping event also allowed an opportu nity for outreach to Ukrainian - American women in our area. Through all of our activities , we strive to propagate Ukrainian culture and causes. In the p ast, our branch has held special programs fe a- tu r ing exhibits or film screen ings at a local public library. Under consideration for 2013 is a plan to commemorate the 80 th anniversary of the 1932 - 1933 Ukrainian Holodomor - Genocide. Most of the members of our branch are b i- lingual , but meetings and minutes are conducted in English. We are unique i n that we are the only English - speaking branch in New Jersey.
