My current research project, “ Invisible Agency: Representations of Gendered Historical Exp e- riences and Social Identities in the Ukrainian Women's Personal Narratives, ” explores how women experienced the main events and phen o- mena of Ukrainian history during the 20th ce n- tury. I am looking to answer questions such as: Where were the Ukrainian women in the decisive moments of Ukraine ’ s recent history? What were they doing w hile the men were building socialism as workers and collective farmers, driving out the Nazi troops as Red Army soldiers, fighting against the Soviet regime as members of the national u n- derground resistance, suffering in the Gulag as political prisoners, o pposing totalitarianism as dissidents, dismantling the Soviet Union and building the independent Ukrainian state as the activists of Rukh, and implementing a market economy as the new businessmen? Did women participate in these events on an equal footing w ith men? Or did they experience the most dr a- matic and prominent historical changes in other ways? Through women’ s personal memories (oral accounts of their life, written memoirs, letters, and diaries), I am trying to understand how they fit their personal histories into the big History through which they lived. If we ask ourselves what we know about women’ s experiences of Ukraine’ s recent past, we would have to acknowledge that we know almost nothing. Yet this knowledge is absolutely essential if we are to comprehend the sources and the character of gender problems in contemporary Ukrainian society.
