30 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2012 Zena Bundziak A DEED WORTH EMULATING On November 5 and 6, 2011, the Epiphany of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, held its annual Autumnfest. It ’s a joyful celebration of Ukrainian culture and heritage. Attended every year by many people, this event gives the whole community a chance to experience all things Ukrainian and also serves as a fundraiser. There was Ukrainian music, dance, and food. The most prized objects for sale were hand - embroidered pillows, tablecloths, hand - painted ceramics, and wood carvings. These were generously donated by Mr. Isydor Bundziak and the Bundziak family in memory of their mother and grandmother Zena Bundziak, who pa ssed away this summer at the age of 87. The proceeds from the sale of these objects were to benefit the church and Branch 124 of Soyuz Ukrainok. Some articles were embroidered by Zena herself, and some were gifts and items that she lovingly collected thro ughout her life. Zena Bundziak, like so many Ukrainian immigrants, came to the United States after the end of World War II. She met her future husband Iwan , and together they started a new life in the USA. They settled in Yonkers, NY, and became active i n all aspects of Ukrainian community life, including owning the J& Z Meat Market in Yonkers. They instilled in their children a love of their Ukrainian heritage and culture. Zena later worked for the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM) in Ellenville, NY. Sh e was also a member of the Organization for the Defense of Four Freedoms for Ukraine, Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, and St. John’s Ukrainian Church Choir. Zena was a member of many Ukrainian Catholic Churches, including St. Michael’s in Yon kers. Zena was an opera singer (Soprano Soloist) who in 1988, in recognition of 1000 years of Christianity in Ukraine, performed at The Vatican Papal Auditorium in the presence of his Beatitude Cardinal Josef Slipyj and His Holiness Pope Paul II. Item s from Zena Bundziak's collection for sale at the Autumnfest in St. Petersburg, Florida Zena Bundziak’s legacy passes on to another generation to enjoy, appreciate, and cherish. These beautiful hand - made items become more valued as time passes. So we are particularly grateful to her son, Isydor, and his family for such an exceptional gesture. Such a deed is truly worth emulating. Yaryna Telepko, Branch 124, St. Petersburg, FL Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н .
