Public Library throughout December with an exquisite miniature Christmas tree, a didukh , a kolach , dolls and stuffed a nimals in Ukrainian costumes, and hand - embroidered dolls in Ukrain - ian dress representing dozens of regions of Ukraine from the collection of Hanna Chereen who embroidered these herself over a period of many years. On December 4th, Branch 5 6 members took pa rt in the North Port Library’s “ Christmas in 1 800.” Lidia Bilous organized the crafts program with individual kits for children to make Ukrai nian Christmas tree ornaments — golden spiders and walnut teddy bears — to take home and decorate thei r own trees. Assisting Ms. Bilous that day were Larissa Shpon and Ann - Marie Susla. Also in December, we held our annual festive Christmas gathering where members and their guests enjoyed a delicious dinner catered by Olde World Restaurant, while members contri - buted delicious canapés and desserts. Maria Nawarynsky, founding president of Branch 56, and current president Chrystia Stecyk presented special 50 year UNWLA membership and achieve ment certificates and gold pins to Zina Ferenc, Maria Hrab, Lidia Kozak, Stephania Shandra, Tania Silecky, Tamara Weremienko , and posthumously to a member we lost most recently, Maria Chornij. That evening, the membership gave special recognition to Bohdan Pochmursky, a longtime supporter of the UNWLA, who, through the U NWLA Scholarship Program, has estab - lished the Bohdan Pochmursky Endowment F und that will benefit students in Ternopil, Ukraine. The evening concluded with everyone joining together in singing Christmas carols, led by Christyna Bodna r Sheldon and our speci al carolers . To round out this year and to com - memorate the 20 th anniversary of the UNWLA Milena Rudnycky Branch in North Port, Florida, we have now published our cookbook, Favorite Recipes: Ukrainian Culinary Treasures , just in ti me for the Christmas hol idays. Inspiration for this work came from our former president, Oksana Lew, who felt strongly that we need to preserve our rich culinary heritage and share it with our neighbo rs and with future generations. Committee chairwoman, Chris tyna Bodnar Shel - don, and a hard - working group of ladies worked tirelessly for months to bring this project to fruition. And now , as the season continues into 2012, our members look for ward with enthusiasm to further accomplishments in numerous and exciting activities throug hout the coming new year.
