32 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2009 Making Your Clothes Dryer Work Better, Last Longer, and Run Safely Contributed by Dora Horbachevsky Not long ago, the heating unit went out on my dryer! We called the gentleman who fixes things around the house for us, and he told us he wanted to show us something. Then he pulled out the lint filter and held it up for me to examine. It was clean. It’s always clean because I remove the lint from the filter after every load. Or so I thought. Taking the filter to the sink, our Mr. Fix - It ran hot water over it. The hot water just sat on top of the mesh. It didn't go through it at all! Our expert explained. The dryer wasn’t suffering from some mechanical glitch but from something much simpler — those nice little sheets that all of use to make our clothes soft and static free and make them sm ell so nice. Seems that these nice little dryer sheets do something else that most people don’t know about. You’ve probably noticed the waxy feel a dryer sheet has when you pull it out of the box. When exposed to heat, that waxy substance builds up on yo ur clothes and on your lint screen and leaves a film over the mesh. Week after week, month after month, the film gets denser. You can’t see it, but sooner or later it clogs up the filter and burns out the heating unit. Sometimes, the results can be worse — t hat film - clogged filter can cause a fire and even burn down a house. Our expert told us the best way to way to keep a dryer working for a very long time, lower the electric bill, and stay safe is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water an d an old toothbrush at least every six months. You learn something new every day! The process takes about 30 seconds. When you rinse, you’ll see the water run right through mesh. Tell your friends. You’ll all save money on electricity and avoid needless appliance repairs. You might even save someone’s life. Dora’s Other Helpful Household Hints Static Cling. P in a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. This also works with slacks that cling to pant yhose. Broken Glass. Use a wet cotton ball or Q - tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily. Vacuum Hose Extensions . To get something out of a heat register, under the refrigerator, or other appliances you can’t easily move, add an empt y paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to the end of your vacuum hose. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings. Unsealing Envelop e s . If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something or sign something, just place y our sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily. Foggy Windshields. Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser. Works better than a cloth! Shaving tips. Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair. Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
