“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОТВЕНЬ 2009 19 One of the highlights of the WCU conference was the visit and speech of the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko, who was warmly greeted and who described her own vision for Ukraine and her solutions to Ukraine’s ongoing problems. That same evening, the Prime Minister invited the WCU Board of Directors to an impromptu reception at Vysok yi Zamok in Lviv, where she responded to variou s questions from attendees. Our stay in Ukraine continued for another week beyond the formal meetings, during which we met very interesting and outspoken individuals who are working to make their country a better place to live. Marianna Zajac, President ( To be continued in November issue. ) New Hor izons for UNWLA Parliamentarian Oksana Skypakewych Xenos O ksana Skypakewych Xenos has been appointed to the position of Administrative Law Judge with the Social Security Administrati on’s Office of Disability Adjudication and Review. This office is the highest administrative appeal level of the Social Security Administration. As a federal administrative law judge, Judge Xenos holds hearings and issues decisions on appeals from initial determinations under Title II (Retire ment, Survivors and Disability Insurance) and Title XVI (Supplemental Security Income) of the Social Security Act. The decisions she makes crucially affect the lives of claimants, some of whom are society’s most vulner able, and, in the aggregate, involve significant Social Security program dollars. Ms. Xenos served as the IRS District Counsel for the State of Michigan from 1989 to 1998 and as an IRS trial attorney from 1981 to 1988. She also served as an attorney and t ax law specialist on tax - exempt organizations with the IRS Rulings and Agreements office in Washing ton, DC, from 2002 to 2009. Before reentering federal government service in 2002, Ms. Xenos practiced tax law as a principal with the law firm of Rubenstein , Isaacs & Xenos in Southfield, Michigan. A retired U. S. Army JAG Corps Lieutenant Colonel and Foreign Area Officer , Ms. Xenos qualified in dual foreign language specialties — Ukrainian and Greek. She serves as the parliamentarian for the Ukrainian Nation al Women’s League of America and is a longtime member of the UNA and of the Ukrainian American Veterans Michigan Post 101. From 1995 to 2002, she served as vice - chair of the Ukrainian Selfreliance Michigan Federal Credit Union. Ms. Xenos is a graduate of t he Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Schools in Detroit. She received her law degree and her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Slavic languages and linguistics from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Oksana’s husband Theodore is a Detroit - area restaurant o wner. Their son Elias, a practicing attorney with a Michigan law firm, and his wife Yulia are the proud parents of daughter Emelia.
