18 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2009 WFUWO delegate and guests Atena Pashko, Past President of Soyuz Ukrainok (3rd from right) and Rostyslava Fedak, current Vice President of SUU (2nd from right) . assistance to Ukrainians around the world, and upholding ties with Ukrainians for charitable and educational purposes. Just as attending our UNWLA Conventions gives our membership the impetus and inspiration to carry on its mission and work, so does this gathering of worldwide Uk rainian women’s organizations instill in attendees a feeling of sisterhood, a common thread of determination and hard work for the good of our people. During the event, those of us representing the UWNLA saw and heard much that attested to the fact that ou r organization is deeply respected by other Ukrainians around the world. Three roundtables were held during WFUWO’s annual gathering. The first focused on the future role of WFUWO, the second on the participation of WFUWO member organizations in the Unite d Nations ’ campaign entitled “Blue Heart” (an initiative aimed at generating awareness about human trafficking throughout the world), and the third dealt with methods to ensure the future of the WFUWO magazine Ukrainian Woman in the World . I was invited to participate in the third roundtable. As most publications today face the same issues (i.e., financial considerations and subscriptions), I was able to draw parallels to Our Life and offer suggestions based on some of the changes we have implemented during this past year. Although our first obligation and loyalty as UNWLA members must be to our own magazine, I encourage each UNWLA branch to purchase an annual subscription to Ukrainian Woman in the World as a means to keep our membership apprised about Ukrai nian women’s organizations around the world — how different and yet how similar we are. While I participated with interest in the scheduled programs and events, I was particularly touched by personal encounters — whether meeting a delegate from another country for the first time or becoming reacquainted with someone I had met at a previous WFUWO meeting. The World Congress of Ukrainians’ (WCU) annual meeting immediately followed WFUWO’s and was also held at the beautiful Lviv University Polytechnic Institute. S ince its foundation in 1844, this university has been one of the most important centers of science and technological development in Central Europe . Again, reports from diaspora community organizations throughout the world were submitted in writing and/or read. I reported on behalf of the UNWLA, emphasizing the work of our branches across the United States in 2008 in commemorating the 75 th anniversary of the Great Famine of 1932 – 1933. Most of the participating diaspora organizations are now centered around communities of the lat est immigration leaving Ukraine. These emigres often voiced their desire to stay involved in the politics and domestic affairs of Ukraine. So much so that WCU leadership proposed to create a Commission of the Diaspora under the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreig n Affairs . The delegates voted to accept the proposal. WCU leadership will be working to promote this new partnership . Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
