24 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2009 United Nations Delegations Women's Club . Elise Andrianarivelo (Madagascar), President UNDWC; Nadia Shmigel, WFUWO representative to the UN ; and UNWLA President Marianna Zajac UNWLA Social Welfare chairperson and has communicated with me several times during this visit. Althoug h initially planned as a family visit during the holy season of Easter, her trip included many UNWLA assignments, which will be written up and published in a future issue of Our Life . A bill recently introduced in New York State proposes to include the stu dy of the Ukrainian Holodomor in the social studies curriculum for high school students. This bill needs the active support of our Ukrainian Ameri - can community and its orga nizations to ensure that it is endorsed and passed by the Education Com mittees in the New York State Assembly and Senate. Since the UNWLA is a member of the National Holodomor Committee, the initiator of this effort, our New York branches will advocate this necessary project in Albany, the state capital, as well as in members’ communit ies. On April 21, Dr. Natalia Sergeyeva, the wife of the Ambassador and Permanent Repre sen tative of Ukraine to the United Nations, hosted a “Ukrainian April Tea” at the Ukrainian Museum in New York. This was the second such spring event sponsored by the United Nations Delegations Women’s Club and hosted by Dr. Sergeyeva at our Museum. Dr. Sergeyeva shared with us that this will now become an annual event on UNDWC’s busy calendar. Attendance was excellent and the mood very elegant as Sofia Zielyk demonstra ted our art of pysanka writing to the international gathering. “Beauty will save the world. These per ceptive words, above all, describe womanhood — women as mothers; women as defenders of the family flame; women as active community leaders, patriots.” These are the opening lines of an article written by Lydia Slysh (the member of Our Life editorial board who is now responsible for the Ukrainian pages of the magazine) to the newspaper Meest. The article was written as an invitation to Ukrainian women of the m ost recent immigration to join the UNWLA. Later in her article, Ms. Slysh eloquently explained that UNWLA members exem plify her allusion to beauty: through the goodness of their hearts, their selflessness, and their love for their homeland. On this Mother’ s Day, I am proud to echo Ms. Slysh’s sentiments and invite our readers to read and think upon the very personal thoughts expressed by those who shared brief stories about lessons learned from their beautiful Ukrainian mothers ( published in this month’s is sue ) . Wishing you a healthy and very Happy Mother’s Day! Marianna Zajac, President Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
