22 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2009 Update on Holodomor Textbook In the April 2008 issue of Our Life, we featured an article on a textbook about the Ukrainian Famine Genocide, which was created by Pennsylvania Distinguished Educator Vera Bej (UNWLA Member at Large) with the assistance of the UNWLA’s Education Chair Christine Shwed, and Ihor Mirchuk, a social studies teacher in the Philadelphia School District. (See “ Ukraine’s Holodomor: An Educational Milestone and a Victory for Truth,” April 2008, p. 12.) In September 2008, we ran an update about a presentation of the textbook at the Pennsylvania Conference of Social Studies Teachers. This month, we are sharing with readers, Ms. Bej’s report on a similar presentation in North Carolina. The North Carolina Council for Social Studies C onference took place on February 12, 13, and 14 at Greensboro, North Carolina. What was so unusual about this conference was the fact that on Thursday and Friday there were 15 sessions running simultaneously every hou r, with Saturday reserved for the usual closing ceremonies. I attended some sessions on Thursday and briefly observed at others, noting that there were approximately 5 to 8 people attending each session. Moreover, I had been informed that many con - ference participants would probably leave by F riday mornin g because of the long Presidents D ay weekend. Our session was scheduled for 9:30 am Friday morning. When I arrived, I discovered that the 8:30 session scheduled in the same room as our presentation had been canceled due to lack of interest. I h ad come to the conference from Pennsylvania and this turn of events made me wonder whether I had made the long trip to speak to an empty room. Fortunately, the day before, Dr. Maryna Kapustina (a researcher at the Univesity of North Carolina and the person who brought me all the AV equiment needed for the presentation) had put together a pamphlet advertising the session beforehand. The pamphlet was distributed to the participants in the lobby on Friday morning by Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Conrad — two individ uals who are deeply interested in the Holodomor and work closely with the Ukrainian community in North Carolina. To my surprise and delight, approximately 60 people attended the session on the Holodomor textbook. There were so many, in fact, that some were sitting in the aisles, on the floor or standing against the walls and in the doorway. We distributed about 50 books and CDs, which is all that we had brought. The presentation was extremely well received. There were good questions, a high level of partic ipation, and those attending loved the model art lesson from the textbook that I had them work on. Many people asked if they could receive a book when the new edition comes out (possibly this summer); I also mailed out several CDs after I got home. If the book comes out as a second edition this summer, we have plans to present it in various states at as many Social Studies Conferences as we can. This is the fastest way to spread the news and get teachers to use the material without going through the legisla tive process in individual states. Vera Bej To the Editor Congratulations on another great issue . . . Seriously, I don't remember when I last read OL from cover to cover . . . It's so refreshing to read articles about activities and issues t hat concern us here in the USA.
