“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2009 13 IN MEMORIAM On Fri day morning, April 3, a man armed with two handguns burst into an immigration services center in Binghamton, New York, shot and killed 13 immigrant students and center workers, wounded four others, and then committed suicide. It was a tragic event whose vi ctims included people from around the world. Most of the victims were students who had come to the United States from Haiti, China, Iraq, Brazil, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Pakistan. The two victims from the United States worked at the center . Roberta K ing, a teacher, was substituting for a colleague on the day of the massacre; Maria K. Zobniw, who had worked at the center for several years, helped Ukrainian immigrants with translations and with their homework. Members of the UNWLA extend heartfelt sympa thy to the families of all the victims of this horrific event. Marie Koropey Zobniw President of UNWLA Branch 9 in Binghampton, Marie Koropey Zobniw was born on July 21, 1948, in a displaced persons camp in Austria. The family emigrated to the United S tates in 1952, settling in Binghamton, which had a strong Ukrainian community committed to preserving Ukrainian cultural, religious, and artistic traditions. “Mima” worshipped at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church. She was an active member of Plast fro m her youth through adulthood, and served as secretary of the local branch of Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA). As an active member of the community, she organized booths for the local ethnic festival, helped raise the flag on Ukrainian Indep endence Days, and gave presentations about embroidery and Ukrainian Easter eggs (pysanky) at area schools. The mother of four children, Mima Zobniw was not scheduled to work at the center on the day the tragedy unfolded. She had planned to spend the day b aking pastries for Easter, but had responded to a call asking for help with translations and set aside her baking to help others. Maria K. Zobniw is survived by her husband of 37 years, Lubomyr Zobniw; loving children, Zoriana Zobniw Nehrebeckyj, Adrian Z obniw, Oresta Zobniw Lisowsky, Chrystia Zobniw, and is deeply mourned by numerous relati ves , friends, colleagues, and immigr ants whose lives she touched. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Laskowski Funeral Home and at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, Johnson City, with internment at the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, or the Ukrain ian School Curriculum Fund.
