“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 200 8 26 Masquerade by Martha Noukas Like other parts of the United States, Houston, Texas, has had some pretty nasty weather this year, the most recent example of which was Hurricane Ike. But despite the destruction wreaked by this unwelcome visitor, members of Branch 118 of Houston held their much anticipated Autumn Masquerade on October 25, 2008. The masquerade had been planned from the beginning of the year and the ladies did not want to disappoint the children of the community who were very excited about the event and had been looking forward to it for weeks. So we took in a deep breath and rolled up our sleeves. The icing on the cake, was that everyone came in costume. Our eldest member and founder of the branch, Justyna Uschak, came dressed as “Baba Justyna.” There were fairies, bumblebees, monks, and kings and queens from around the world. Even Julia Tymoshenko (alias Branch 118 secretary Alla Draxler) put in a surprise appear- ance. The grand prize winners for the best costumes went to Marina Webb and Mike Swydnycky, respectively dressed as Cleopatra and King Tut. After Hurricane Ike, the masquerade was a refreshing social event enjoyed by everyone.
