“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 200 8 22 moments when the lessons learned and the roles perfected brought audiences to their feet and evoked applause that reverberated like happy echoes for many long minutes. But for those of us who remember these moments, the response of the audience was almost incidental — the greater joy came from seeing our beloved Professor Oransky’s face light up and erupt into a magical and rare smile that told us “Well done.” Postscript Several years ago, shortly after returning from Ukraine, I visited Professor Oransky at his home. He was ill at the time, and hoping to cheer him up, I brought him some photographs of the old Kharkiv opera house where he had first conducted. Ever the perfectionist, Maestro Oransky responded to my well-intentioned memento with a disdainful shrug. “I thought you were bringing pictures of the new opera house, not this old barn — it had terrible acoustics.” Jurij Plevako Oransky passed away on Thanks- giving Day 2008. He is survived by his wife and lifelong partner Nadia “Slavtsya” Oransky (a member of UNWLA Branch 43), his daughter Katrya Oransky-Petyk, son-in-law Roman Petyk, and granddaughter Lesia Plevako Petyk. Those of us who were privileged to work with this remarkable man mourn with the family, our sadness eased by the songs he taught and the wonderful memories he continues to inspire. — Tamara Stadnychenko _______________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ _ _________________________________ Powder Based in Tucson, Arizona, Kore Press publishes the work of women authors. On November 11, 2008, Veterans Day, the publishing house released an unusual anthology entitled POWDER: Writing by Women in the Ranks, from Vietnam to Iraq. Edited by Lisa Bowden and Shannon Cain, the book featured poems, stories, and essays written by current or former service- women of the U.S. Armed Forces. There is a photograph and a biographical profile of each of the 19 contributors. Among these 19 servicewomen is Anna Osinska Krawczuk, whose poem “War Terrorism” appears on page 106 of the volume. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mrs. Krawczuk was the first woman to serve as National Commander of the Ukrainian American Veterans, a post she held from 2004 to 2008. Now Honorary President of the UNWLA, she served as the organization’s National President for two consecutive terms (1993 – 1999). Before being elected as UNWLA’s president, she served as chair of the UNWLA Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program (1981 – 1993).
