OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LXIV JULY-AUGUST 2007 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From th e D esk of th e President W ishing all of you a Happy 4th of July as you celebrate America's Independence Day and wonderful August 24 as you commemorate Ukraine's Independence Day! The UNWLA Executive Committee salutes the newly reelected Presidents of the Regional Councils of Philadelphia and New York: Christina Chomyn- Izak and Nadia Sawchuk The UNWLA Executive Committee salutes the newly reelected President of the Board of Trustees of the Ukrainian Museum, Olga Hnateyko, wishing her health and satisfaction in all her endeavors On May 30, 2007, Ruslana Luzhychko was honored at a gathering hosted at New York City’s Ukrainian National Home. Among those attending the event, which was sponsored by the UNWLA under the auspices of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN, were newly appointed Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev and his wife Natalia. Ruslana, a deputy of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, member of President Yushchenko’s Our Ukraine party and winner of the 49th Eurovision Song Contest, was officially welcomed by UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj and New York Regional Council President Nadia Sawchuk. Graciously accepting the bouquets of flowers presented to her by Mrs. Kurowyckyj and Mrs. Sawchuk, the pop icon was then welcomed in the traditional Ukrainian bread and salt ceremony by Ilona Bilevych and Olha Olach. The focus of the event was on Ruslana’s latest achievement: being appointed as the first National Goodwill Ambassador from Ukraine to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which advocates, promotes, and supports the health, safety, and welfare of children worldwide. In her new role, she joins stars like Danny Kaye and Audrey Hepburn who have devoted themselves to UNICEF since its inception. Following in their footsteps, Ruslana draws on her name recognition to promote her commitment to UNICEF’s mission to ensure that every child is nurtured and protected in a world that is often brutal and careless of children’s welfare. She is an especially strong advocate for the rights of every Ukrainian child to health, dignity, and development and she spoke at length on this issue. To the delight of those attending, she graciously agreed to sing one of her popular songs and to pose for photographs with guests. In a brief speech, Ambassador Sergeyev, speaking on behalf of the Ukrainian Mission, thanked the UNWLA for hosting the program, praising the multitalented Ruslana for her music, her work as a member of the Verkhovna Rada, and especially, for her deep devotion to Ukraine’s children. UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj expressed her gratitude to program coordinator Consul Andriy Nikitov and to those attending for their interest and enthusiastic response to the guest of honor. Ruslana, Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev and his lovely wife Natalia, Mission representatives, and several UNWLA members then adjourned to the Ukrainian Restaurant for dinner.
