C rafting, C asinos, and Chapeaux: A C ollage o f C reativity from UNWLA Branch 113 Established in 1986, New York's Branch 113 of the UNWLA has a reputation for sponsoring innovative and successful events. While looking forward to future events in 2006 and beyond, Branch 113 members reminisce about some high lights that comprise our roster of accomplishments. One of these accomplishments was a Crafting Identity exhibit Branch 113 hosted at the Ukrainian Institute of America in 2001. Chaired by Ilona Sochynsky Shyprykevich, who was ably assisted by Vice Chairs Ola Lewicky and Daria Mehrle, the event began with an opening reception attended by a viewing audience of more than 500 people. Ms. Shyprykevich noted that plans for the exhibit embraced two goals. One was to acquaint our audience with nationally renowned craft artists and their wonderful work. The second was to involve young Ukrainian-American men and women in the project, many of whom were sons and daughters of Branch 113 members. We accom plished this goal by utilizing their creative talents in graphic design, creative writing, and marketing. Lew Rakowsky designed an outstanding invitation, Adriana Leshko wrote the text and participated in publicity, and Andrea Kochanowsky headed up and organized our young sales team. The very successful event presented an opportunity for participating artists to showcase and sell their work; art lovers expressed their appreciation and enthusiasm for exhibitors' talents with purchases in excess of $8,000. Following the event, Branch 113 made significant donations to The Ukrainian Museum and The Ukrainian Institute of America. Branch 113's back to back Casino Night extravaganzas, hosted at the Ramada Inn in East Hanover, New Jersey, have also been very successful, in terms of creativity and in terms of our fund raising capabilities. Our first Casino Night, chaired by Iryna Kowal and Roma Rainey was so well attended and so popular, the event was reprised the following year. Under the direction of co-chairs Zirka Gallo and Lida Bilous, the second Casino Night was just as successful and lucrative. From the proceeds, Branch 113 donated $11,000 to The Ukrainian Museum. A more recent event, held at New York City's Ukrainian National Home Restaurant, reflects this creative and financially successful trend. Under the leadership of Branch president Irene Steckiv, Branch 113 organized and hosted a spring "Hat Fashion Show & Luncheon" one Sunday in April 2005. The charming "retro" display of vintage and contemporary hats was grouped into four themes: ♦ The Orange Revolution opened the show and featured hats in orange. ♦ The Fur Collection represented our goodbye to winter. ♦ The third theme showed red, white, and green hats welcoming spring. ♦ The Finale featured flowers traditionally as sociated with Ukraine: таку (poppies), volosh- ky (cornflowers), and sunflowers designed by Irena Masny. As dessert was being served to the approximately 75 guests attending, the b.eautiful models made their grand entrances, much to the delight of the onlookers.
