OUR LIFE M onthly, published by Ukrainian National W om en’s League o f Am erica Vol. LXIII MARCH 2006 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO The UNWLA Executive Committee, National Board, and membership welcome and congratulate Daria Zawadiwskyj, recently elected president of Detroit Regional Council. We also thank outgoing president Lydia Kazewych for all that she has done for the organization during her presidency. From the Desk of the President On January 24, the UNWLA president was invited by the Embassy of Ukraine to meet with Dr. Oleh Shamshur, newly appointed Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States. His Excellency briefed leaders of Ukrainian American organizations about his objectives for the coming year, including commemorations of the 20th anniversary of the Chomobyl nuclear disaster and the 75th anniversary of the Great Famine Genocide of 1932-1933. The ambassador expressed his hope that the Diaspora would continue working to support efforts to ensure the graduation of Ukraine from the restrictive policies of the Jackson-Vanik amendment and spoke of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Ukraine. I presented His Excellency with copies of the UNWLA 2005 Convention book, the November 2003 issue of Our Life , which was dedicated to the victims of the Great Famine and included relevant documents from the UNWLA archives, and the January 2006 issue of the UNWLA magazine. On February 4, the UNWLA had the great privilege of hosting Ambassador Shamshur at a reception in the newly renovated UNWLA offices. In my capacity as UNWLA President, I welcomed the ambassador with a traditional Ukrainian greeting of bread and salt, noting that it was the first time that our organization has been honored by a visit from such a distinguished representative of the Ukrainian government in the 141/2 years that Ukraine has become independent. New York Regional Council President Nadia Sawczuk presented the ambassador with a bouquet of flowers. For members of the UNWLA National Board and for Regional Council Executive committee members in attendance, this was indeed a historic moment in the life of our organization. While UNWLA leaders have frequently been invited to meet with distinguished Ukrainian government officials in Washington and in New York City, Ambassador Shamshur was the first to visit us at UNWLA headquarters. The 50th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women will take place from February 27 to March 15, 2006. During that time, many related events will be held, one of which will have particular meaning for UNWLA members: a seminar that will be hosted by the Ukrainian Mission to the UN for the International Council of Women (ICW) on February 28, 2006. The topic to be addressed will be “Equal Participation of Women and Men in Decision-Making Processes at all Levels.” One of the speakers will be Tetiana Izhevska. The head of the Department of Cultural and Humanitarian Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, she is also the wife of Ambassador Shamshur. In honor of the occasion, the UNWLA will host a special event for ICW delegates from 50 or more countries that will be attending the 50th Commission on the Status of Women as well as the distinguished speakers. Our guests will be invited to a reception and private tour of the Ukrainian Museum. In closing this month’s message, I would like to share with you that your president is the main non governmental representative for the International Council of Women to the United Nations and that Hanya Krill has recently joined the ICW UN team, which is currently preparing for the General Assembly that will be held in Kyiv, Ukraine, from September 5 to 10, 2006. It will be a historic event for all Ukrainian and Ukrainian-American women.
