OUR LIFE M onthly, published by Ukrainian National W om en’s League o f America Vol. LXII JANUARY 2005 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO The UNWLA extends congratulations to Viktor Yushchenko, President of Ukraine M a y G o d p r o te c t h im a n d g u id e h im a s he lea d s U kra in e to its d e s tin y as a d em o cra tic n a tio n c o m m itte d to ju stic e , in te g rity , a n d h u m a n rig h ts fo r a ll From the Desk of the President To all who celebrate Christmas with Ukraine, I wish you joy , health, and prosperity in the coming year! Following an election that began with fraud and controversy, the Ukrainian people have chosen a new president, Viktor Yushchenko. The victory for Mr. Yushchenko is a victory for Ukraine and for the world. Await ing official confirmation of the election results, Mr. Yushchenko addressed supporters of the Orange Revolution, attesting to the significance of this momentous event: “For more than thirteen years Ukraine has been a independ ent nation. From now on it will be a free nation." I would like to begin the year by thanking all UNWLA members for their generous contributions to the Emergency Aid to Ukraine Fund. Your donations were used to purchase food, medications, and clothing. Your generous contributions will be fully acknowledged in our magazine in the near future. To ensure that aid was distributed where it was most needed, I decided that it had to be delivered in per son. I was joined on this journey by UNWLA Vice President Sofia Hewryk and Our Life's editor-in-chief Irena Chaban. I must note that each of us covered the costs of travel expenses from personal funds and that no portion of the funds donated for aid was used for this purpose. We were very fortunate to arrive in Kyiv in time to witness the celebratory mood that marked the end of the initial election and the beginning of a new election, which would be regulated by new rules and monitored for “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2005 11
