Why I Am A Member of the UNWLA by Dzvinka Martiuk Zacharczuk At the impressionable age of seven or eight, I was only child in a family of many adults. Housed in the tight quarters of a Displace Person's camp in Austria, I was privy to endless discussions among family members and their friends about all aspects of "our situation," that is World War II and state lessness. It was in this environment and during these discussions that I first heard the name of Milena Rudnycka who was, at the time, organizing Soyuz Ukrainok in Austria. One of my aunts had been a classmate of Rudnycka's, and because of this con nection, there was instant support for the organiza tion among the women in my family. Thus, at this young age, I became aware that as a Ukrainian fe male, "things" were available to me. When we resettled in America, I soon be came even more aware of these "things" and about the workings of this women's organization. I learned about its successes as well as its conflicts. There was an existing branch of the UNWLA in the town in which we settled and it was a surprise to the "new wave" that the legality of the Soyuz Ukrainok that had arisen in Austria was questioned. There was also a tradition that the wife of the local pastor was the lifelong president of the branch. It was a tradi tion that was soon the subject of conflict between the innocent incumbent and some of the pushy new comers who were unwilling to settle for the status quo. The conflict presented me with examples of the goodness and meanness in women. It also taught me many things about what makes an organization work. The most important and enduring lesson I learned had to do with the great ideals and honor able goals of the UNWLA. It is an organization that is open to all women of Ukrainian ethnicity. Its or ganizational structure is practical and accommodates all educational levels and social strata. It most cer tainly offers a challenge to those who wish to lead. The history of the organization presents a vivid pic ture of how this leadership challenge works—things are accomplished through democratic bylaws that promote an environment of cooperation and self- respect, giving every member an opportunity to ex press herself as well as to contribute to an important cause. It is because of this that the UNWLA has the potential to enrich a woman's life in numerous ways. It is because of this that I chose to become a mem ber and have remained a member for many years. The author is a member of UNWLA Branch 67 in Phila delphia. Readers may recall her many wonderful stories, published in Our Life under the byline DMZ. Barbecued Swordfish Steaks 4 swordfish steaks, about 1/2 lb each (1-inch thick) 1/4 cup chopped parsley 1/4 cup chopped coriander 1 garlic clove (coarsely chopped) ІУ 2 teaspoons paprika У 2 teaspoon coriander XA teaspoon cumin 2 tablespoons lime juice 3 tablespoons virgin olive oil Pinch of cayenne pepper Prepare marinade by combining parsley, coriander, garlic, paprika, cumin, cayenne pepper, lime juice, and olive oil in food processor (make sure to add olive oil last). Tex ture of marinade should be paste-like. Pour marinade into flat dish, coat each piece of swordfish well, transfer to plastic bag, and refrigerate for 2 hours, allowing the fish to absorb marinade flavor. Grill swordfish steaks 4 or 5 minutes per side. Errata. It has been brought to our attention that in the Table of Contents for the May, June, and July-August 2004 issues of Our Life, the name of Dr. Ihor Magun, who regularly contributes articles on health matters, was misspelled. Sincere apologies to Dr. Magun and to our readers for this error. 20 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2004 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
