OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LXI SEPTEMBER 2004 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk of the President How quickly the summer months have passed! Hopefully, everyone had a safe and restful summer and has returned to work or school or branch meetings full of new energy and new ideas. I also hope that many of you found time during the summer to be active members of the UNWLA. I wonder how many of you have invited a new member to join our organization. Perhaps some of you have en couraged a group of women to form a new UNWLA branch in your city or community. If so, please let us know. We are looking forward to presenting you with a citation for your efforts during the XXVII Conven tion. Membership is the soul and body of an organization. Without members an organization ceases to ex ist, and we hope all of our members take steps to keep the UNWLA alive and active. The best way to do this is to encourage new membership, and because we have so much to offer, this should not be difficult. It should be a way of life. There are many women that can and should become members of the UNWLA. Sometimes they do not become members because they do not know enough about our organization. Sometimes what they know is not accurate. It is up to us to let these women know what our organization is and does and offers. It is also up to us to correct misconceptions. Some Ukrainian women in our communities are busy and may feel they have no time to join the UNWLA. What can we do to let these women know that membership in the UNWLA provides a support group that presents opportunities to share concerns, advice, and assistance? Others do not speak Ukrainian and feel they would not be welcome. What can we do to let these women know that our organization already has English-speaking branches? There are women among the new immigrants who may feel that our organization is only for women of the previous immigration. What can we do to let them know that the UNWLA has sev eral branches whose members are all new immigrants and many other branches in which old immigrants and new work together as friends and partners? There are many women of Ukrainian heritage with little or no connection to the Ukrainian hromada. Some of these women would welcome the chance to connect or recon nect with women who share their ethnic heritage but are too shy to make the first move. What can we do to make that important first move, to take the first step toward building a relationship, to make them feel wel come? It is up to our branches and regional councils to provide a forum where these women can be made welcome and where these issues can be discussed. It is up to us to host events and programs that are educa tional and enticing and have the power to motivate others to join us. In the coming months, we will have many opportunities to do this. For example, many of our regional councils and branches are planning celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the UNWLA’s publication Our Life. These celebrations should not be limited to UNWLA members. They should include other members of the Ukrainian-American community. Membership applications should be placed on every chair or table, and UNWLA members should make a special effort to speak to non-members and invite them to become mem bers. To assist you in this effort, we are publishing a membership application form in this issue of Our Life. Clip it. Make copies. Distribute it. On November 5, 6 and 7 of this year, we will be holding our annual National Board Meeting. One of НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2004 13
