Allergy Update Recently, a number of elementary school chil dren were asked to answer some questions about mothers. We hope you find their responses enjoyable and enlightening! Why did God make mothers? She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is. ♦ Mostly to clean the house. How did God make mothers? He used dirt, just like for the rest of us. ♦ Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring. ♦ God made my Mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts. What ingredients are mothers made of? God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean. ♦ They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string I think. What kind of little girl was your Mom? I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy. ♦ They say she used to be nice. What did Mom need to know about Dad before she married him? His last name. ♦ She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? ♦ Does he get drunk on beer? Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores. Who's the boss at your house? Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed. ♦ I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than Dad. What’s the difference between moms and dads? Moms work at work and work at home, and dads just go to work at work. ♦ Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend's. What does your Mom do in her spare time? Moth ers don't do spare time. ♦To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long. If you could change one thing about your Mom, what would it be? She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that. ♦ I'd make my Mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it and not me. by Ihor Magun, M.D., F.A.C.P. Allergies are caused when the immune system fights allergens that are harmless and do not produce a response in most individuals. The body's immune sys tem protects against harmful materials such as viruses and bacteria. An allergic reaction is the body's way of reacting to a foreign substance referred to as an aller gen. Antibodies are created to fight the allergen and this, in turn, stimulates the release of histamine. His tamine is responsible for allergic symptoms that in clude stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, postnasal drip, coughing, itchy eyes, throat, nose, watery eyes, con junctivitis or allergic "shiners," dark circles under the eyes. Our environment contains natural and man- made substances that can cause allergy symptoms. The most common allergies are caused by airborne aller gens and are classified into two categories: seasonal and perennial. Seasonal allergies involve grass, trees, and weed pollen. Perennial (year-round) allergies usu ally involve dust mites, mold, and pet dander. Dust mites are invisible to the human eye but are found everywhere. Dust mites as well as their waste products can frequently be seen as specks float ing in the air when a ray of sunshine floods the room. Mold is a spore that can be airborne and is found (out side of the obvious places like a shower stall) in areas commonly overlooked: houseplants, mattresses, uphol stered furniture, and even old foam rubber pillows. Pet dander is a protein on animal hair that dries and be comes airborne. It is the dander (protein) that causes the allergy, not the hair itself. There are several ways to avoid or reduce po tential allergy reactions. Preventive measures include using a vacuum cleaner that contains an HEPA filter. Dust only with a damp cloth to prevent setting parti cles airborne. Use dehumidifiers to maintain humidity below fifty percent. Remember to change filters regu larly on appliances. Sensitive individuals should use allergy-proof covers on pillows, mattresses, and box springs. Wash bedding in hot water weekly. Keep pets out of bedrooms and groom them outdoors. Avoiding known allergens can sometimes prevent symptoms, but people are sometimes not aware of what causes an allergic reaction. If severe symptoms arise, allergy testing is recommended. In most situations, common sense works; over the counter allergy or prescription medications are rec ommended. A box of Kleenex tissues is always good to have around.
