P hiladelphia R egional C ouncil C elebrates the U krainian W om an and Her C reativity A year ago, Our Life published a report on The Ukrainian Woman and Her Creativity, a program hosted by the Philadelphia Regional Council. The event, which attracted more than 200 members of the Ukrainian community, was organized as a fundraiser to defray the costs of relocation for UNWLA head quarters. Characterized by old world elegance and charm, the afternoon featured a classic tea embellished by comfortably familiar musical interludes and a fash ion show, a collage of beige, navy, pastel green, and muted red assembled Eryna Cvikula Korchynsky and Marta Stompil (Branch 67), co-owners of Philadel phia's Red Poppy Ukrainian Boutique. This year's tribute to The Ukrainian Woman and Her Creativity, had its own distinctive flavor, an interweaving of traditional and New Age, of Ukraine and the Diaspora, local and imported talent, and a cor nucopia of surprises. Tickets to the event were sold out well in advance, and some 240 guests, happy to attend a function that promised variety and respite from a winter season that was lasting too long, converged at Philadelphia's Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center. The day was auspiciously warm, enhancing the festive mood of those present. Introductory remarks were again provided by emcee Olena Karpinich (Branch 88). An accomplished speaker, Ms. Karpinich drew the audience into the program with powerful reminders of the depth and substance of the Ukrainian woman—her strength, her perseverance, and her ability to transform the world creatively and artistically in myriad ways. This theme was reflected throughout the program, which featured an array of entertaining and intriguing examples of the Ukrainian woman's resilience and creative abilities. Opening the program was Mariana Sadovska, a talented vocalist from Ukraine who has spent years collecting and perfecting a repertoire of folksongs from Ukrainian villages and whose recent debut on the American stage has elicited rave reviews from critics. The medley of village songs performed by Ms. Sa dovska was reminiscent of another time and place. It was followed by a performance that delighted the au dience by providing a humorous look at the here and now—a medley of comic vignettes from Diaspora Fashion show coordinator Eryna Cvikula Korchynsky with humorist Natalia Hewko.
