Learning About Tradition by Daria Hanushevsky Rev, Kiril Angelov blesses baskets for children of Svitlychka. Left to right: Victoria Lebedko, Joseph Lyko, Natalie Lebedko, Joseph Marang, Sonia Staveski, Marko Dilai, Nicole Kostinski, Roman Pavlovych, Melanie Pavlovych, and Maksym Chalupa. Svitlychka, under the auspices o f the Ukrainian National W omen's League o f Am erica Branch 120 o f Rochester, N ew York, holds its weekly Saturday morning sessions at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church. These sessions are open to any child who wishes to participate in a dynamic program offered in Ukrainian and are run by two energetic, innovative young women who are themselves graduates o f the program. M s. Nicole Riedl, a music therapist by pro fession, and Mrs. Larissa Cholach, who is completing her studies as a speech pathologist, approach their work at Svitlychka with enthusiasm and a deep love o f Ukrainian traditions and art that inspires their young charges to learn. On Saturday morning, April 3, 2004, Svitlychka pupils (ages 3-5), learned the traditions o f the blessing o f Easter foods. The children were instructed on the preparation o f the Easter basket and the traditions be hind this beautiful Easter custom. They lined their bas kets with "vysh ivky" and then filled them with tradi tional Easter food items, including miniature paskas that were baked for the occasion by Mrs. Marika Riedl (nee Zubil). When the baskets were ready, the children took them to a small area in the church auditorium that had been set up as a blessing area. Father Kiril Angelov, pastor o f St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church, then explained to the children (in terms they could easily comprehend) about the meaning o f the Easters baskets and what the priest does during the traditional Easter service when the baskets and their contents are blessed. The children listened carefully to Father Krill's explanations. Then, full o f pride and enthusiasm, they watched as he blessed their small baskets. Parents who came to see the ritual were pleased and thankful to Father Krill for his explanations. Som e remarked that it was the first time that they truly understood the tra ditions behind the blessing o f the Easter foods. 18 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2004 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
