is also ours. And whether w e like it or not, it is we who must extend an invitation to these wom en and show them that our organization, with its proud history, is indeed worth belonging to. For our organization to move forward we must be committed to it. W e must take on obligations that assist the organization and we must make certain that when we take on an assignment it will be done to the best o f our ability. W e must respect our leaders and support them in their goals. In turn, w e must expect no less from them. Criticism in our organization is good, only when such criticism is intended to make things better. The person who criticizes has the responsibility to offer good alternatives and then help implement her suggestions or recom mendations. Criticism that begins and ends with criticism solves nothing. I would like to ask all o f you to get more involved and I can confidently promise that you will benefit by do ing so. There is much to be learned from participating and working in our organization. Y o u w ill have many mean ingful opportunities to enhance your personal life through your association with other U N W L A members. W e have accomplished much in the 80th year o f our work. But we can do so much more if all o f our mem bers make a decision to play an active role in the U N W L A rather than merely observing the activities o f others. Becom e a part o f many wonderful things through participation. As we continue to celebrate the 60th anniversary o f Our Life, we are pleased to share with you another article from the past. In 1944, our magazine was in its infancy and our organization was experiencing growing pains that many o f us can recognize today. In the article that we have chosen to share with our readers this month, you will see concern about membership, advice for leadership, and suggestions fo r effective participation at branch meetings. It was written by Anna Bodak who was, at the time, vice president o f the UNWLA. Ms. Bodak's poignant observa tions, intended for the women o f her time, can serve us well in the present. In some ways, they show us that the more things change the more they stay the same. In other ways, they show us that there are numerous ways that we can ease our own "growing pains" by taking positive steps to make things better. Working to Make the UNWLA Better When one realizes how much lies ahead o f us, how much work has to be done for our organization and its members, for wom en and for the society that we live in, it sometimes seems that this assignment might be impossible to fulfill. In our midst we have those that say, “ At present there is nothing can we do to succeed and no one is interested in Ukrainian community work.” They just fold their hands and do nothing. Yet, there are more o f us that go forward at rapid speed to accomplish our goals. And these are the people who will succeed be cause they believe in bettering tomorrow for all o f us. They work very diligently in the U N W L A for the good o f its membership. The U N W L A has a wide range o f interesting programs and every woman in our organization has the opportunity to find her niche and use her know-how for the good o f the organization. A ll o f our branches work within the frame o f our bylaws. Sm all branches m ay do less and big branches m ay do more, but whether a branch flourishes or stagnates depends not on its size but on its members, its president, and its executive committee. So what can we do to prevent branches from stagnating? In the first place, all members should at tend every branch meeting. This is important because it gives us time to discuss the work o f our individual branch and the work o f the entire organization. Every member can make arrangements to attend a branch meeting once a month. Every member can also make arrangements to stay for the entire meeting. A branch cannot succeed if its members come to a meeting, pay dues, and run home. Participation matters. Every month w e receive information from U N W L A Headquarters on what needs to be done to make our organization and our community better. These messages are sent for a purpose. They can be consid ered assignments. Every branch receives Our Life. Our new publication should be read. There is much that we can learn from its pages. Every branch Should make a strong effort to at tend to local business. Here we must underline that success depends upon the branch executive committee, which can organize and coordinate work that needs to be done. Individual members also play an important role, but they must be prepared.
